Full Fairing for FJ??

ok i like it ive seen one and i want to know more. mainly heating and cooling, theres a guy on f/book and his looks nice if you like full faired bikes. he says the only drawback is access to the engine and it does get a  bit hot. you guys seem to know what the wing wong on the gooses bridle is for as far as fj is concerned  i have an idea it would get hot as buggery here in ooostrayliea so maybe thermo fans and bigger oil cooleer. its not a cert but i want to keep looking in to it. From what i can see looks like original top half and instead of bellypan it has a full bottom piece that joins up to top. not a 3 part one like the kwaka ( top to chin scoop and side panels then belly pan)

Yes it is a PITA during maintenance. It has to be removed to just adjust the idle screw on mine, let alone look for oil leaks (ooops. Did I say that! ), or change the oil or access engine side covers, etc. And if you're fussy with looks, the fitting sometimes with aftermarket stuff is not exact. Any gaps do stand out with the plastics' appearances. HTH.

paul, is that the spec 2 fairing? thats the one i want to get

I do not know if it is a spec 2 fairing. It is one piece from the upper fairing down.  It fits well and it is plastic, not fibre glass. However, the fit at the front, in front of the oil cooler, does not line up as much as I would like it to. I plan to fabricate aluminum clamps/brackets to fasten it to the upper fairing there.  Right now I use red zip ties and they function well to bring the two fairings together.  Also, the oil level window is barely usable with the fairing on.... I would prefer to make the viewing hole in the fairing wider to be able to view the oil level more easily.

The fairing came with the bike when I bought it, and it doesn't have any descriptive labelling, so I don't even know if it was available from Yamaha back then, or if it is an aftermarket.  I have seen exact same ones on other 86's, though.

Since  I live in Canada, and I do not use the bike as a commuter, I rarely have to worry about the heat factor. I would imagine that it would add heat quite a bit though in warmer climates.

I do like the looks of the full fairing because it is something different....

Is there anyone else out there with experience with the full fairings?  Any comments? or suggestions? preferences?

427 Chevelle, what are the different specs for the fairings? Or is Spec 2 the brand/model name?

ok, I see the listings of spec 2 fairings (brand name) online. I am still trying to get a look at some pictures to compare.  I haven't looked into this before...

ok, I was able to obtain a couple of pictures from Spec 2..They still offer the 1100 lower fairing, but not the 1200.  I assume they just have 1100 fairings left over in stock. The picture of the 1200 fairing on the 86 is not the same as mine and I'm not sure if they are one piece or not, where as mine is just one piece. The lower for the 1100, at Spec 2 , sells for $299.95.

wow thanks paul. thats heaps of info... i may end up trying to source one over here for the rainier months.... i dont think summer over here and traffic will be friendly towards it.... not unless i bite the bullet and mod with bigger oil cooler and a thermo fan.

I hope I'm not hijacking the thread... The lower fairing I have seems to be from an 86 FJ1200 "reduced effect".  It's not mounted yet, as I have no brackets for it. Anyone have any thoughts on where to get the brackets? Or even pix of them? I'm pretty handy, I can fab them up, but I don't want to start from scratch.

Hi Paul. This pic of the fairing on the 86 appears to be a Targa fairing. I have a brand new, never mounted fairing hanging in my garage. I never got the mounting brackets with it. I have mock mounted it a couple of times, but fit is not the greatest. The sides hit up against the distributor cover/crank case. It should have cutouts on it like your 1100 fairing has. Paint color and finish is very good though.

Well I stink at these silly little digital cameras. I guess I really am old now.

The full fairing I have is Identical to the one shown above on the 1100.  I would kinda like to mount it, the bike just looks like it's missing something.
The front mounting hole is directly above the point where the lower frame cradle mounts to the frame, about 1/2 inch out. The rear hole isn't near anything. it's just out in space around the oil filter area.  I think even a verbal description of where the brackets were, and what they bolted to would help me.

IIRC ...i believe the mounting holes on most full fairing are similar to the one i got from T Roy... they used longer engine cover bolts/frame bolts (which ever ones line up with the fairing holes) along with different length brackets ( bent flanges on either end ) to hang the fairing.

Don't take this personally, but a big appeal of the FJ is that beautiful engine hanging out there to be admired.

Maybe it's the paint job, but that full lower is just fugly!
