my 1984 fj wont start when hot

Musonee,

Take the starter off the bike, and open it up.  Clean all the crap from the bearings, check the brushes, clean the commutator and the grooves in the commutator if necessary, put new grease on the bearings and put it all back together.
You'll be amazed at how much quicker it will now spin.

Thanks for your tip. Guess I'll have to do that, the bike spend almost a year at the Yamaha shop, one of the things fore repair was the starter but maybe they forgot to check it. I think that was one of the reasons way I had to tow it to another mechanic shop to make it run, but that's another story.

What Mark says. In a big way.
I believe I've had this problem with both FJ's.

1) Do you have the heat shield installed still fore of the carb bank? If not, it WAS there for a reason.
2) Are you following the fuel routing diagram to a T? And I do mean EXACTLY. Feel free to alter that routing at your own peril. Many BAD things happen with those tight spaces under the tank and you can have pinched and really HOT hoses.
3) At one point I insulated my fuel lines with some hose wrap made by DEI. Worked for me...on more than one bike.
