Got my Zumo mounted today.

I finally set aside the time to get my Zumo 550 mounted that I picked up used.......after getting the 2011 map update..



I was originally going to mount it like this, but it ended up being too high, and too close to me for my liking.



So I used the u-clamp that came with it, and bolted it to the left clip-on.



All mounted.......just had to run the wires to the fusebox. I tied the power wire to the ignition circuit so that it would power up when I turn the key on, and power down when I turn the key off.



Then I set out for a test ride..
It works perfectly, and as i suspected, my factory speedometer is off by about 10mph at freeway speeds (65-70mph)
at 100mph it is off by about 15mph. Now I no longer have to guess.

Mounted my Zumo exactly the same way. Perfect position, just below instruments and not distracting, particularly at night. Many 1000's of K's later I could not think of a better spot.

I mounted mine by drilling a hole in the stem nut and mounting a ram ball to this.





I find this the perfect solution.

I have since replaced it with a nuvi 260w in the same location.

Ram mounts offer several location options..

I thought about the stem nut, but didn't have the stud ball.....looked into ordering one, but it seems we all like the GPS mounted in the same location.
I like the locating screw option as well.......I might order the stud ball for the stem nut eventually, but for now, I'll use it the way I have it...

  I hesitated to say anything to the Adam who used the stem nut as a mounting spot. It it is very thin and could be a problem when using a heavy weight GPS or camera. I did noticed the the GPS Adam is using is very compact and appears to be very light weight.

I just bought the ball with a 1/4-20 set of threads and made the offset from a small piece of metal and added the stainless riser to lift the mount above the handle bar assembly.

Frank actually ask me to make a custom stem nut to mount his GPS as he was concerned of the weight of his GPS on the stock stem nut.


So anything you want is possible...

That's a lot more elegant than my solution... I just found a fender washer that would fit inside the stem nut, and deformed it until it matched up inside.  I have a StreetPliot 2820, a big chunk of GPS.  Only issue I've had is that I need to switch to the short RAM arm to keep it from loosening itself up due to the weight of the thing.

It was a good deal for $130 new at a clearance sale a couple of years ago.  I keep it covered in plastic wrap.  Cheap solution, and it worked well for the rain soaked NESR in Maine.
