Earphone advice

G'day all,

Due to the past 14 years of solid use which has led to a constant subtle aroma of sweat emanating from the worn out lining, I recently decided to put aside my trusted AGV helmet and bought myself a HJC AC12. 

It fits great and looks good but compared to the past 14 years of only hearing the satisfying hum of the motor with the AGV, I found the wind noise with the HJC was to say the least ... effing annoying and I suspect potentially very damaging to my hearing.   

Apart from the obvious use of ear-plugs (which will probably be the chosen remedy), I thought I might as well check out the possibilities of being able to listen to music instead of the constant roar of wind blasting my ear-drums.

So I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for ipod earphones which have the added bonus of being able to minimise wind noise.

Not sure what your budget is, but the Skullcandy Ink'd sounds pretty decent for the price.

If you look around, you can find them for < $15.

Actually the skullcandys fit in the ear like an earplug and do a decent job canceling out the wind noise. Personally I like to listen to music on the bike and with my earbuds I can turn it down enough to easily hear the motor while enjoying the music on my MP3. There are better earbuds out there that do an even better job but I am too cheap to buy them.

This is one simple idea of what you can do.  http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2014.msg16107#msg16107  The quality of the headphones is up to you, but this idea does cut most of the wind noise.
I think someone on here still has the putty too, that can be sent to you for the price of shipping.

I think you already know this, but the idea is to seal out the unwanted outside noise, and add more pleasant noise (mostly at a lower level).

I also get GPS prompts through my earphones.

Yeah, I knew that, I was kidding...

But you know, for whatever reason I have fear of riding while listening to my iPod.  I have this vision of riding while listening to music, wiping out on my bike, (possibly due to the fact that I did not hear something I should have otherwise heard) and lying in a ditch mortally injured, unable to turn off some ridiculous song, that, I whimsically added to the iPod, blasting in my ears.  Oddly enough, it's sufficient to keep me from riding while listening to music very often.

While I know this is irrational, it is nonetheless disturbing to think of dying to the sound of 10,000 Maniacs or some such.

I also use the skullcandy earbuds. I find they cancel out a lot of the outside noise so that I do not need to turn up the volume on my MP3 player. I find that I have no need to adjust the volume when comming off the highway as I had to do with a previous set I had.

I typically do not wear a hold-your-ear-buds-in helmet in the car though....

i buy the earphones, the in-ear ones, but they usually come with that thin, rubbery half-circle shaped retention.  i then go to radio shack and buy the foam earphone surrounds, the ones that are similar to foam earplugs.  they seem to be better, in that they conform to my ear and seal out the noise better.  they also don't seem to "crackle" as much as the original thin rubbery types.

I have custom made earplugs (like the putty ones mentioned earlier - just without the earbuds in them) and then have stereo speakers in my helmet over the ears and ear plugs (you will need some kind of amplifier setup for this).  This has been my preferred setup for many years and I enjoy it.  While the quality of the sound is not as good as in-ear buds - there is less hassle and I feel it is a bit safer (decibel level) on my ears that way.  I put my ear plugs in, put on my helmet - and then only have one connection to make.  No fiddling around with wires inside my helmet.

Also, I can hear other sounds around me better than having ear-buds directly in my ears.  My .2 cents...
