Hey folks, I saw this posted over at the Yahoo FJ board so I thought I would bring it over here FYI.

Hank Scott wrote:
I have in stock 2 new items for the 1200 & 1250. JE pistons 3.110 bore size,
very light with a tool steel wrist pin. An 82 MM all new 1350 kit using the
latest forgings from Wiseco. Made strickly for us, this piston uses a very
narrow & short skirt, gas ported, a short wrist pin also tool steel is .650
shorter. These pistons are as light as a 1200 piston yet almost 5MM bigger. The
performance gain is just awesome. Thunderous torque without the loss in
reliability. Hank

I don't see any pictures of the new Wiseco's or prices posted at Hank's site.
RPM  Randy can you get these? Any more info?

Cheers folks, Pura Vida.   Pat

Would love to see pictures of these.  Isn't gas porting usually a bad idea for a street motor?  Or are these the side ported type?  Uses low tension rings I'd guess?

Pat Conlon

Hey Andy, I recall reading years ago, about FJ engine builders who went to larger displacement motors, did some voodoo magic on gas porting. I thought it had something to do about drilling the ports in the webs, between the cylinders, for crankcase gas pressures to equalize on the piston's downstroke. I'm going by memory here so please help me out. Perhaps the new Wiseco's have the short skirts designed in a way to help this process?

With big 82mm slugs, I do not know why this gas porting would be bad for a street motor. Oil flow issues?

Yea, I'm looking forward to looking at some photos.
A 82mm forged piston with the same weight of a oem 1200 piston?  Must be some small skirts.
Thanks Randy, looking forward to seeing what you find out.

Pura Vida.

A classically gas ported piston is drilled from the top into the back side of the top ring land.  So the combustion pressure helps shove the rings more tightly against the bore.  Means that you can get away with running lower tension rings, and have less drag through most of the stroke, with better seal when you need it.  Problem is the porting flils with carbon over time and eventually jams the rings in an outward position, causing huge wear issues and otherwise being problematic.

Though then I thought about it, and it's ridiculous.  Almost no one ever does it that way anymore, it's all from the  side these days.  So it shouldn't be a concern at all.

Ok so here are the pictures, courtesy of Randy@RPM:

First the standard JE 1250cc pistons:

Now the new 82mm Wisecos, look at those short skirts and wrist pin:

Did you ever get any news on these?

Pat Conlon

~$780.00 + ship, and only available thru Hank Scott Racing (HSR) or a Hank Scott dealer like Randy @ RPM. The 82mm pistons are made special for HSR and not available thru Wiseco, only HSR.

Here's how my '84's 74mm piston looks next to the new 82mm Wiseco:

Pat
Could you post a pic showing the top of that Wiseco? Thanks!

Pat Conlon

Other than what is posted above, sorry, I don't have a close up of the crown.
Since these are going in my street bike where we locals can only get 91 octane, to reduce compression the pistons are now in the shop to have the crowns milled. After they come back perhaps Randy can get a shot of the milled crowns, if that will help you.
After they come back, they are going back out to Swain Tech for TBC crown and PC-9 skirt coating: http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10963

I can't tell if the crowns are gas ported. The side shot shows that they are not laterally ported. Excellent move coating those pistons. :good2: I have used Swain Tech many, many times and have always been satisfied with the results.

Pat Conlon

Yea Mike, they are laterally ported in the ring grooves....see the holes?

Yes...I see them now Pat after I put my glasses on. DOH! :wacko3: Thanks. That short wrist is great. You can have a pile of aluminum sitting on the bench trying to lighten pistons and find you only took off about 3 or 4 grams. If you combined that piston set up with Carrillo A beams it would be fantastic in terms of weight savings. Very easy on the crank and smooth. Are those pistons using an XA or XC ring pack Pat?
