Fj 1100 Carby Rebuild

Hello,

I am about to rebuild my carbies with standard rebuild kits.Just wondering if anybody has any tips on how to clean the carby housings and the rest of the parts to get them looking nice again?

Carb cleaner, compressed air.  Use no steel wire in any holes for any reason.

Ultrasonic cleaners are lovely, you could get a denture cleaning unit probably big enough for a single carb at a time if you were desperate.

Probably the best way to get them all clean and ready for a re-build is to put them in an ultrasonic cleaner for a few hours.
Trouble is finding one!

If you're in the states, Harbor Freight has a heated ultrasonic cleaner for about $80 that works fine.

I've used one of theirs to clean some carbs and master cylinders and they came out looking like new.

It's a little slow to heat, so you'll need to run a couple of heat cycles to get the cleaning solution up to about 150 degrees.  Dunk your carb and run several cleaning cycles.

Change the solution, repeat for the next one.

Thanks for the help guys will have to maybe invest or find out how much to use the ultrasonic cleaner.I was also wondering that I had heard that if you get rid of the airbox and out on those little air pods for each carby that I need to change the jets.Is this true or can I just rebuild the carbs and not have to adjust anything.Thanks in advance.

Yes, you will decidedly want to alter the jetting if you remove the airbox for good.  Isn't anything that you won't already have apart to clean them properly though.

If you retain a stock exhaust or slip-ons, I'd suggest going up 2 sizes on the mains, shimming the needles about .020", and using that as a starting point. 

With an aftermarket 4-1 or 4-2-1, I'd start with 4 sizes bigger on the mains and .040" under the needles.

In either case you may end up having to go up a size on the pilots as well.

However all of this depends on what kind of elevation (/air quality) that you have where you ride.
