Hi all,i thought it was time to show you some progress on my fj1200. Ive got to be honest, ive recently had a total hip replacement, due to arthritis (good old national health service, free of charge!),so decided to sell the bike on ebay. I had a very low reserve, but it didnt sell, which im now glad of! I cant ride at the moment, but should be on my feet soon.
In the mean time i set about my bike with some spanners and a big hammer...

Too cut a long story down,i had to change bearing, and then still machine reducer inserts to allow me to use the original 20mm fj spindle. I now need to buy a caliper and caliper carrier.

The front,wasnt too bad.

Again i need calipers,a correctly sized tyre (tire)and a mudguard (fender lol)

Ive seen a lot of stuff where people have fitted 5.5 wide wheels, but dont recall seeing a 6inch wide rim fitted, anybody have any ideas as to what front sprocket i can fit to get the chain to line up?? Any help gratefully received. :good2:

One of the other things im thinking about is lengthening the swingarm with bolt in extensions,is anybody else running alonger arm on the street? Pics would be great!! :good:
Ive a suzuki gs1150 (gsx1100efe here)with along arm,but ive not seen a fj with one yet, other than dragbikes?

Ready for it rebuild!

So, Mr. dixiedog. What year is the R1 front-end you're installing?  Are you planning a more detailed description of the install?  So far, so good ...

Here's some pics of a bike I picked up from Chicago after my engine parts had been stolen.  I bought the bike for the engine and am using it now in my streetbike.  This fall or winter I plan to swap another engine into the streetbike and put this one back together.  Will probably separate the drag stuff and put it back mostly stock to sell it.  Not great pics, but does have an arm on it and is lowered (used a strut in the rear) and was used on the street.  It sat in a shop for 4 years or so before I got it.

The dragbike has a 6 inch R1 rim.  The swingarm is an FZ1.  With the R1 rim all the way to the LEFT in the swingarm, it was offset 8mm to the RIGHT still!  Normally to fit the FZ1 swingarm you take 4mm off each side.  Instead I took all 8mm off the left side in order to center the rim in the chassis.  I used a 1/4 inch offset countershaft sprocket from TRAC that is part of an R1 wide tire kit.  I had to grind a little off the inside of the frame where the lower chain runs (the back side of a mounting lug for the foot pegs or side plates) like Frank and others have done when using an XJR output shaft.  I mounted the rear sprocket "backwards" to offset it slightly inboard and the alignment is spot on.  I used the stock R1 caliper and mount and added a spacer outboard of it to take up the rest of the room in the swingarm.

I like the projects!  Especially the Kwaker z1000r

Im not sure what front end it is,but i will try to find out. The front has been fitted i believe to an old (K)z1,so the stem has already been modified. I need to change the fork seals,so i'll pull it apart and take some pictures for you to see whats been done. :hi:

Wow wow wow wow wow,i love the look of that bike! Its got me thinking about doing the same with mine, ive a star racing drag pipe from my gs1150 thing,i could try to make a new swingarm with a strut, and lower the front. I think it would make a great streetbike, even with a standard motor.

andyb

Having a strut, no suspension travel = good streetbike?

Er..

Its not my bike but I hear the guy used it for a Daily for some time before he sold it. It had and extended swing arm cause the guy had the 1340BB on it then decided he needed to turbo the thing.

I would really be interested in what year front end you're using on this build.  Also, I'd be interested in knowing what else is involved in swapping an R1 front end.

If you modify the stem to fit, can you use the entire front end setup...wheel, brakes, etc?

thanks

Hi all,can i suggest people have a look on the uk's fj site,[url]http://www.fjfjrbiker.co.uk/index.php?topic=7103.0]http://www.fjfjrbiker.co.uk/index.php?topic=7103.0
Ive a longer build thread there, its not going anywhere fast though!
The front end turned out not to be an R1,but a Suzuki TL1000.

Also,if you visit the uk site, you'll now find the R1 rear wheel is out,and a kawasaki zx7r 6inch rim is going in!! The hub of the R1 was too wide and a lot of hassle to even think about modifying,so the change is under way!!
