Exhaust Question

I can't seem to find a torque specification for the header on a 1990 FJ1200, or any FJ for that matter. Anyone know what I should torque it to? Also, my bike does have an aftermarket Vance and Hines system. Does that change the spec I should torque it to?

T Legg

The factory manual for my FJ1100 says 11 ft/lbs . I think it should be the same for the later models.
If you over tighten the nuts the exhaust pipe flange will start to bend first before you pull a stud out of the head.

Millietant

Just be aware that the V & H system might need to be removed for every oil change !!!

Access to the sump drain bolt when I ran a V & H 4 into system back in the early 90's, was non-existent.

Thank you T Legg, unfortunately the flanges are already very banana like which made taking them off and putting them back quite annoying. And that is exactly the reason I had to remove the exhaust Millietant! What a silly design. I think I'm going to save up for a different exhaust system eventually.

I went back to my standard exhaust for a while, but then to a Motad 4-2 system (don't think you ever got them in the USA), then a Kerker 4-2 which I loved and had on for a few years, but it was really just too loud for long journeys and needed constant attention to keep the rust at bay on our sky-ridden roads. The Motad went back on for a while and I eventually settled on a Remus 4-1, which has been brilliant over 20+ years and still looks like new every time I clean it up  :sarcastic:

Remove the left side oil cooler fitting at the oil pan for draining. Replace the o ring on the oil pan fitting every 2nd drain. Drain bike on it's side stand.
