i made the sad mistake of taking apart my 85 cap cap, didn't realize the gasket is really a oil seal. now, can't get it back together. i have got it all together a couple of times but the key will not turn. it's a true finger fumble

I got it back together but the fingers are flared out too much and I can't even get into the filler neck so obviously this is wrong

If you turn the key will the fingers retract far enough to close it?

no even close. the fingers have to sit like this

with two fingers being straight that means a tumble mechanism and the little springs have to be straight in a line also i presume. you can see spring intentions on the fingers that are inside the housing so I'm pretty sure this is correct. The problem is though I'm messing those springs up big time

I cannot find one print even the service manual showing any kind of breakdown of the gas cap assembly does anybody have a print?

I started looking at old Yamaha gas caps on eBay and I noticed all the fingers were in quite a bit so I looked at mine and noticed I can mount the finger side-by-side
