Went for a Ride! Finally!

Finally got BattleAxe back on the road!  Took my first "just for fun" ride - although still working on the tune.

Still needs a bit of work cosmetically and a few things mechanically - but it is on the road again!

Back story - this is my 89 I've had since early 2000.  It's been off the road for about seven years - victim of providing critical parts for the Racebike during that time - and lack of time to get it back on the road.

Pictures.... we want pictures.

Congratulations on getting BattleAxe back on the road.

Proof of life!  :flag_of_truce:

Biggest update this past week was fabricating a baffle insert for the open megaphone.  The old supertrapp core was destroyed 8+ years ago when getting it ready for Bonneville.  DIY baffle works pretty well - went from ear splitting loud to deep rumble.

Made a major change in how the tune works today - pretty much had to start over on tuning, but made good progress today.  Still have another major change I'd like to make - but when I first tried both changes at once it really upset the system.  Steady progress though!  :drinks:

Cosmetically it needs a LOT of work but it will get there - nothing sandpaper and a bit of flat black paint can't fix!  And a bit of fiberglass work too ...

FJ1200W

Busted mine out last week, we had a couple nice days over 55f
My battery is shot, but there is a new one, old school lead acid, waiting for said acid, and installation.
I'm giving up of SLA batteries for now, they just don't seem to last. And the old school vented battery has higher cranking power.
Thanks to this group, I'm running a VW voltage regulator conversion, so I'm leaning toward fine tuning in the voltage and never regretting the old school battery again -
At least until I have to add water. ;)
I am somewhat ashamed that I've not washed my bike and it's looking, well, rode hard and put away wet.
Maybe because it was - more than once

Nice looking bike. It's got potential. What's the front end off?

fj1289

Front end is early R1.  The R1's have used various offsets on the triple clamps - early models had same 35mm offset as stock FJ which I used here.  The race bike uses 02/03 triples with 25mm offset  - wanted the increased trail for high speed stability, although it does handle a bit odd.

The old girl has been through a few iterations through the years:

After the original onset of moditis (and when I first started drag racing)

Then after the theft recovery

Then at Bonneville

As it should be!  Riding is > washing!   :drinks:

I like the look of the bike with the blue mudguard and then IMG 5197 near what looks like the desert.
I've got a XJR front end on my FJ1200 but have a spare FZR1000 EXUP RU USD front end knocking about in my garage though i've put one on my XJR.  If you can understand that.

fj1289

Nice!  Always liked the XJR - looks good!

Chris, do you have the EFI on the street bike, or is that only used for your track bike? I'm curious as to how that system has evolved.

Pat - the streetbike served as the prototype and is still EFI.  It is using the first gen MS3PRO now. The Racebike is using an MS3PRO-EVO now.  Both with FJR tb's, LS coils, and XJR trigger wheels and pickups.

I'll finally be able to get out for some rides - took me better than three years to get her back up and running on the street again.

Went for another short tuning ride today.  While sorting out the tune previously had a couple issues crop up.  One, couldn't get the fuel pressure sensor to play nice - was showing off scale high pressure.  Swapped stock FJR fuel pressure regulators - no change.  Swapped a 75# sensor for the 60# sensor - still off scale high.

Second issue was I noticed the duty cycle on the injectors was way high at high RPMs and WOT.  These injectors should be good for 3-4 times the HP this stock cams and stock head engine is producing.

Figured I had a pump issue or a fuel filter issue.

Checked the fuel filters - lots of trash.  The fine filter (10 microns) is AFTER the pump (and after my pressure sensor  :dash2: ) to protect the injectors.  The course fuel filter (100 microns) is pre-pump to help protect the pump.  Replaced both filter elements - fuel pressure around 40 psi where it belongs!

The problem is my fuel table is now skewed and calling for too much fuel.  Tried to make a short test loop to see just how rich the tune is now - but had trouble keeping enough heat in the engine to keep it out so warm up enrichment.  WX forecast is calling for 50's in 8 or 9 days - hope it holds AND hope work leaves me at home for it!
