Hi, just purchased an 87 FJ1200. Runs great but pretty rough. Looking to restore it to as close to original. Any suggestions for body panels would be great.

When you say Original, are you willing to make some upgrades for performance while still looking original?

The FJ can be modernized to perform much better and safer with wheel changes to allow modern rubber. Easy stuff like the spin-on oil filter adapter from RPM. More involved like Fork valves and rear shock for much better handling. The list is a real rabbit hole. We call it Moditus. Its how we find our Kookaloo.

As for restoring you 87 to near New condition. Ebay, time and patience will be your best friend. Side panels are plentiful, but not always in the colors that you need. A very good condition 1987 main fairing will be nearly impossible to find.

Before you dive into the rabbit hole, try a can of rab/injector cleaner such as SeaFoam.  It takes a tank or two (at the label recommendations) to finish a can, and to do the magic that it can do.  Once that is done, with the carbs clean, if it still runs rough, you may need to balance the carbs.  New spark plugs may help, too.

What is wrong with the body panels?  Some can be replaced.  Some panels are scarce.
