How to clean clutch pushrod?

I bought my bike without a clutch slave cylinder installed and the pushrod is extremely dirty, I would like to clean it off before I install a new slave cylinder but I don't know the best way to do that. I can tell the pushrod is loose and it feels like I could pull it all the way out if I wanted to but I don't know if it's ok to do that or if pulling it all the way out would mess something up.

Well....that is one way to get the push rod out...a very exciting way....

Slide it out, clean it, put it back. Don't start the engine till the slave is back on, or risk "spearing the cat".

And there is a little steel ball on the end of the pushrod that can fall out and be lost and you find it 5 years later.Why do you want to take the rod out? you can just use som engine cleaner spray it on and let is soak into the grime then just use water and clean.

Just thought it would be easier to pull out and clean

It is highly unlikely the steel ball will fall out the hole when the rod is pulled out. However, most of the rod is in an oil bath and clean. So only the the part you see while it is in, will be dirty.
