Good afternoon:  I'm still nibbling around the edges of my FJ1200 winter project deciding just what needs to be addressed and making plans.  I went to check out the rear shock to see how it was adjusted.  Couldn't see it at all.  On both sides of the bike a thick plastic sheet covered access to the short.   I'm not sure what this is for but I don't think it is still in it's intended location.  Anybody know what this is and what it is supposed to do?  Do I need it?

Also I found an orphan electrical connection adjacent to the battery,  two wire ( black and white/off white).  Couldn't find such a connection on the wiring diagram.  Haven't found anything that isn't working yet.   Again, any help appreciated.

There is a splash shield under the battery box that extends from side to side and covers the top of the shock. The splash shield should have a hole in it where your battery vent tube runs through.  On the 91-95 there is no adjustment at the top of the shock, however on the base of the shock is where the spring preload is adjusted....the splash shield does not cover anything on the shock you need to get to...Yes, you want to keep this splash shield.
There is a extra plug on FJ's used for the Calif. vapor control system. This is a key on plug you can use for other accessories.

If I remove the battery and the battery box will I be able to remove this and make a replacement that fits in the original location without having to disassemble half of the motorcycle?

The owners manual specifies that the spring pre-load adjustments are on top of the shock and the damping adjustments are on the bottom of the shock.  Is this not true of the 1992's?

I'm going by memory, I recall the first 3 model FJ's (84/85; 86/87; 88/90) had a remote shock adjuster connected via chain to the top of the shock. In an effort to cut costs several things were changed on the last '91/95 model FJ. The remote shock adjustment was one feature discontinued. I remember seeing the stepped preload adjuster on the bottom on the 91/93 shocks.

Yes, remove your battery box to get access to the splash shield. On a bike I worked on, the rubber material crumbled so I could not use the original as a pattern, I had to cut and fit a cardboard pattern then transfer it over to the sheet rubber.  I used zip ties to secure the rubber shield to the subframe.

Hello Everybody:  I hope you all had a great holiday.  I used the time to remove there battery and battery box to get a better look at the splash guard.  It came out easily enough but in 4 pieces   With this removed I can confirm that the rear shock has the pre-load adjuster on the top and the damping adjustment on the bottom.  I don't know it this is the original shock or not but from the amount of crud on it, it certainly looks all of 30 years old.   It will be replaced soon.   I was able topic the splash guard together using some hot glue.  Pictures are attached.  This is the way it was configured in the bike but I doubt it looked like this when it left Japan.   Is this supposed to be flat or at least somewhat flat?    I will make up a new one out of stainless steel but would like to start off with some idea as to what it should look like.
