Good morning.
Wondering if someone can give me conformation as to if a 1984/85 fuel petcock does or doesn't fit a tank from a 1986 1200? I understand the electric reserve function wont work but I dont need that.
Thanks.

Yes, the 84/85 petcock fits the 86/87 tanks.
I'm kinda of an old fashioned guy, I think the electric reserves are stupid.
You've got a gas gauge, low fuel light and odometer....with these, if you run out of fuel, you deserve to walk.

I don't know if the '86 is the same as my '89, but I would assume so.  The electric reserve has nothing to do with the petcock.  It turns off the fuel pump.

Bryan, the vacuum petcocks on the 86/87 are different than the later '88+ fuel pump models.
Remember, no fuel pumps on the 86/87's so the petcocks have a built in solenoid that restricts fuel flow when triggered by the fuel level sensor in the tank.

Thanks much. I was pretty sure I'd heard it would work but wanted confirmation.

I never understood what was wrong with the old fashioned petcocks.  You know, the ones with reserve and a two height inlet inside the tank.  Run out of fuel on "run" and switch the petcock to reserve opening the lower tap in the tank and get another gallon or so....

Yes... simple and true, and none of this vacuum open and shut off shenanigans....just train yourself to reach down and shut off the petcock when you turn off your engine.

Alas, the good old days before we had motorcycles with plastic bodywork. .
