Had a Honda get dropped off........

FJ1200W

A buddy of mine dropped off his fathers bike.

It had been to 4 technicians, making me #5.

It would not start. Cranked, but no run.

The CDI box tested good, the general consensus was the stator was bad and needed to be replaced.

This entails pulling the motor on the Honda CX/GL series, and that's what  I planned on doing.

During my tests, I did indeed find the ignition coils of the stator were indeed bad. Charging coils seemed OK, as did the pickups.

There is a company from overseas that makes a replacement ignition that uses a switched 12V power supply rather than the stator coils.

It's a $300.00 gamble.......

FJ1200W,

Not sure I understand the problem, there.  However, if you are getting 12V pulses coming at the right timing, have you considered a Coil-Over-Plug fix?  Several FJ owners here have done this for their FJs, and it seems much simpler than  the conventional high-voltage set-up.  I have a GL500 too, and if the coils fail, Honda now has no help for the poor owners.  I gathered up what I need to COP for my FJ1100, and I may someday try that trick on the GL500.  So far, so good, there, no wild rush.  The CX/GL crew also has an alternate fix, using new quad-runner parts, but you may want to check with those guys, about applying that option.

Just a thought . . .
Cheers,
Red

Hey Red, please tell me more about the COP (Coil On Plug) mod for the FJ.
I'm aware of many folks using aftermarket coils (Dyna, Accel, etc) on our FJ's, but I am not aware of any COP conversions. It's an awfully hot environment under there.....I'm not sure the pencil coils would be happy under there. The Yamaha engineers had a reason they mounted the oem coils in the air stream.

However, I would love to learn more....

Pat,

Okay, not sure if I am remembering correctly here, because I have both an FJ and an FJR, so this mod would interest me, either way.  I found the COP mod for the water-cooled FJR, but (so far) I haven't found the mod being done for the FJ.  I believe I did see one, at some time past, but can't say for sure.  I have not done that mod, so I can't address the FJ heat issue directly, but I believe the air scoops on the FJ cowling might be all the cooling we need there.  I am all in favor of additional air cooling, anytime.  I could see adding directed air from the FJ scoops (maybe 1" piping of some type) straight to the plugs.   Here is what I have found (you may need to log in at the site, IDK) -

FWIW, the R1 donor bike was liquid-cooled, also.  Heat may be an issue with the FJ.  As I said, just a thought . . .   :hi:

Hey Red, no worries.
Yes, I'm aware of a few bikes where I have seen the COP conversion, (Vmax, FJR, etc) but they are all water cooled.
I am always on the hunt for FJ mods....I thought I missed something.

Cheers laddie!

I've been interested in the COP modification too. Always wondered if there was enough room under the tank for them. As far as cooling goes, the coils are a long way down in the water cooled motors and it's probably pretty warm in there too.
Scoops and their actual value have always been an issue for me. They're pretty much useless when you really need them - in town or sitting in the heat. Anywhere else, at speed, are they doing any good? I think they're more a styling device than anything else. I had a bunch of Suzuki GS1100's and never had a cooling issue with any of them. That was with no oil cooler either.
Then again, not a big fan of most exhaust systems, or turn signals either.

If you try Hayabusa COPs they WILL hit the tank - have to space up the rear of the tank almost a 1/4 inch.

Don't know about any others

Stators go on those bikes like clock work.
