Steering head ring nut orientation

Readjusting the steering head on my 1989 FJ1200 and after disassmbling, inspecting, and relubricating all the bits I noticed that the ring nuts are different on either side.  One side has a taper on the inside diameter and a rounded surface while the other side has a taper or bevel on the outside diameter along the notches that appear to be barbed in the corners; this side is also flatter.  The Yamaha service manual states the tapered side of the ring nuts must face downward, OK, which tapered side?  The manual does not show any detail on this.  I asked a service technician at the local dealer and he swears the side with the taper on the inside diameter goes against the bearing cap while the flatter barbed side goes against the washer separating the two ring nuts.  Futhermore, he said the upper ring nut is oriented oppositely so both flat barbed sides contact the washer.  Any FJ1200 experts that can settle this?  Thanks!
