Right-Hand Side Oil Pan Plug Replacement

Hey guys,

I've got what looks like an oil leak (more of a drip, really) coming from the right-hand side of my '86 FJ1200. I've isolated it to (what I think) is the drain plug that's on the side of the oil pan, and I'm thinking the o-ring has rotted out after 33 years...but what I'm not totally sure of how to remove the plug and replace the o-ring. It doesn't look like there's any socket head to turn, and I've read on other threads here that you should be really careful not to crack the plug or the whole pan.

I've attached a few pictures of where the leak is coming from, along with a snapshot of the schematic highlighting the part...can you guys tell me how to replace it? Thanks for your help!

There is supposed to be an 8mm hex in that plug. If the plug is cracked and someone filled it in with silicone,  that is most likely your leak.

Oh awesome, thank you Randy! Actually, thank you twice, because you had a clutch master cylinder rebuild kit I badly needed a few months ago too!

I'll take a look more into it after work today, but if it's indeed filled with silicone, do you have any suggestions as to how to remove that plug?

The hex key opening may be filled with dirt.  In either case, just dig it all out with a pin or a small jeweler's screwdriver.  If you find a crack (very unlikely), leave everything be until you can get a replacement plug, then go after it.

Use a well fitting allen wrench (not ball end).  These plugs are a SOB and it's easy to round them off.

Well it only took me a month to get it replaced!  :shout:

The replacement screw from RPM fit like a charm, and I made sure not to over-tighten...took the bike out for a spin, let it run for a bit after, no leak!
