What do you do with a landing strip in the middle of nowhere

A group of us northern Nevada riders took a ride on Sunday. There were two of us on FJ's,one FJR,my son Ian on his zzr1200 and I think the other bike was a Victory or something like that.We rode down 395 torwards Coleville then stopped to regroup at the star of hwy 89 to Markleville.two Ducati's that were parked saw us and took off up the canyon.we regrouped then headed out a minute or so behind them.after passing a couple cars we caught them and pushed them up the rest of the road(actually we kept a safe distance behind them it was their pride that pushed them up the hill). We pulled off at the top to let them ride in peace. After breakfast in markleville we drove out to a local resevoir. There in the middle of nowhere was about a 3,000 ft or so landing strip .We drove over to a portapotty  to take a piss and the next thing you know I see Ian launching down the airstrip and zipping past then out of site over a rise in the strip. He came back and said 155 mph .That was too much for the FJR so out he went for a run.He was a little dissapointment he only hit 140 but still imprresive.I wish I had my black FJ1100 but I was on my Yellow one with no speedometer and weak compression so I took a run on Ian's zzr instead.what a rocketship I hit 145 then shut it down but still plenty of room to go faster(I didn't want to upstage my son).It was altogether a fun ride.I'll be back with my black FJ to do a little flying in the future.

Travis, I may be seeing you in Sept.  I spoke with a buddy in Reno and we are trying to figure out a good Sept weekend. I'll make sure my speedometer is working.

Alpine County Airport.  Looks like you had about 4400 feet of runway, less than a mile.  And you were at about 5800 feet of elevation.  The data says it averages less than a flight a day, all transient aircraft.  Nothing more that some parking spaces.

Is "Landing Strip" not a slang term in the US"?

If confronted with one in Australia and you needed to ask what to do with it (the thread title), time to surrender your man card.

It carries the same connotation in the US, you just don't hear it very often these days.  :blum1:

We're not a club. Clubs have rules. Pay dues. Wear hats and shit.

When confronted with either kind of "landing strip" in the middle of nowhere. You should know what to do with it.

It was definitely a minimal "air strip",I didn't even see a wind sock.4400 ft is a perfect distance plenty of room to stop.the rise you can't see over two thirds of the way down is a little unnerving

Well Travis, if there is ever a WCR in Reno or thereabouts, perhaps you have just discovered an awesome location for a day ride.  Imagine taking everyone there and the gang gets to go full throttle for over three quarter of a mile.  That would be a unique day ride.

It sounds like fun.I'm not to sure how the FAA would feel about it.

Although we don't regulate non-certificated airports, its basically not something we condone.  It comes under the state aviation authority and the local constables.  Now if a plane was operating there and trying to land, that's opens up the possibilities.

We're fine if it's not an active runway.

edit: Whoa, another FAA'er, Chris?

edit: After zooming in, there are no navaids, except maybe a non-directional beacon. It doesn't even look like there are runway lights. AirNav says it averages 21 flights per month, fewer than 1/day, so I imagine you could get a few runs in with a spotter watching for aircraft on approach.

I wonder if Father Pat's monster motor would win the airstrip shootout?
