My 89 FJ has 97,000 miles on it, and I'm wondering if the cam chain needs to be replaced yet. The engine seems to run well, but honestly, I don't remember how it ran when it was new. Isn't there a 100,000 mile limit on the cam chain?

There is no mileage limit of the timing chain. There are many documented 200,000+ engine out there still in operation on the stock chain.

If you check the cam timing and they are out of time due to stretch, the cheapest and easiest way to correct is Slotted Camshaft Gears. This will allow the cams to be brought back into time due to a stretched chain.

Timing belts yes, timing chains no....You are confusing timing belts with timing chains.
