Red and Hooligan, I'm pulling my bike apart for all sorts of things not related to this.

I think I'll follow what you've both suggested. No need, as it seems to work fine.
However, after 35 years I think a bit of service might be due.
1984 FJ1100 Ms Effie brand new :)
1984 FJ1100 Pearlie, stock as.
1985 FJ1100 Mr Effie 647,000K and still running hard.
1985 FJ1200 'Yummy' takes a licking & keeps on ticking
2013 Trumpy Tiger 800, let's do another lap of Oz

After all is said and done, more is said than done :)

Noice!

Being black should match the original.

Was it plug and play as it seems from your post?
It seems it was but I didn't measure the length back to the o ring and gear, but I did have a bit of trouble installing it, which was good as it meant it was the gears meshing.
But it works so all good

So how can I tell what model it is ? There are no markings on it apart from some on the black cover which don't correspond to anything.

Sorry, I missed this earlier.

The two brush starter motors have a phillips/JIS screw in the body which hold the two magnets.

The four brush starters have the magnets epoxied in and no visible screws.

Good to know, one taken out had the screws and now I know what they were for, other had no screws.

But I have noticed a slight howl still there when starting, like a dry bearing but not all the time that starter is engaged, more as it's just started and finger is coming off button.
