92 - 95 GSXR600 Rear Rim Install

I decided to do the GSXR rear rim swap and grabbed a whole rear end off of a 600 last last fall.  It was advertised as a 750, but once I got around to actually checking it out, I noticed it had five bolts on the sprocket.  It also came with the brake caliper that has the stubby torque arm on it.


I drew up a piece to have my brother machine, then welded it to the swing arm for the torque arm to slide through.  I decided to take the swingarm off to have the piece welded on, and it was a little more difficult than expected.




I've got everything back on the bike with a spacer on the right hand side.  I just need to line up the chain and torque everything down.

The only issue I have right now is that I didn't have the swingarm chain guard on when I set it back in place.  Since its so old and stiff, I can't get it back onto the swingarm.  It looks like Randy has ones available for 89 and newer, and I'm not sure how they would work on my 86.

Yep that's just what I did. Ordered 750 gsxr and got 600. Twice. I had the piece made. Mine is not as pretty. Had a long piece made. And cut off what I needed for both swingarms. Your going to find it's hard to get smaller than 40 tooth rear sprockets for the 5 bolt. Gixxer sights say the 600 wheel is the lightest. I think it's just cause it has one less bolt

As long as it's a little more pliable than what I've got, I should be able to squeeze it between the frame and swingarm.

I was running a 17/41 before and I was fine with that.  Cruising at 60mph I can get over 55mpg.  I'm going to a 18/42 which should be similar with the 180/55 tire.

Unfortunately that swing arm chain guide will not fit your 86. The part that you need is no longer available from RPM or Yamaha. FJmonkey has been trying to get a replica version made. I am not sure where it stands at the moment.

To help clear up the chain guide status.
Back at the 2018 RPM rally, the Monkey made chain prototype was installed on my bike.
The testing of this part has been hampered by California's wettest year for a while, but I've managed to put 1,500 miles on it since October. (Way below my usual average).
Anyway, results are mixed. Initially a bunch of shavings dusted my swingarm, but that seems to have stopped now. Another issue was the prototype had a bend in it and didn't/ doesn't sit well against the swingarm. Furthermore the material it is made of is really hard plastic, not rubber like the originals, but even so it fitted easily at the front.
In summary then, I'd say a few things to iron out still.
Just put new tires on and got some better pictures of what it looks like:

I regularly go to Bay City, Michigan.  I've got family that lives there.  Gagetown is less than an hour away from there.  I wonder if I can find time to take a ride up there while they're open

Fred, that seller on Ebay is the same one that is on Andy's bike for testing, Hotfoot Moto. If the testing produces good results then we can take this item off the extinction list.

I was able to get my chain slider back on yesterday.  I sprayed it with silicone for a couple of days and kept it in a ziploc bag.  Just before I put it on the bike I put it out in the sun in the bag to get warmed up.  It was still hard to squeeze in place, but it was much more pliable than before.

Got it out on the road today for a quick trip to the gas station.  Everything looks good so far.  Gotta get used to the rear brake again though.

I must've found/bought one of the last original NOS seal guards on the planet last year.
It cost me $80 usd but in the original Yamaha package so I knew it was genuine.  The ebay site I used was not in english (Russian?) so I took a slight chance.

It worked out this time, but I hope new repros do become available soon.
So many parts becoming extinct for these old beauties (right hand protectors?)

I've been searching for and buying almost any original wear item/parts that tend to break I can find lately and hoarding them for fear I will never find some of them again.
