Ride quality vs rear spring

Does anyone know anything about the specs for this spring. My bike's rear suspension has always been very stiff. The suspension bounces my ass off the seat even over mild bumps. Finally, I see a potential reason why.  It looks like the rear spring has been replaced. 1990 FJ 1200.

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Good job Markus!

A 1300 lb spring is much too stiff for a FJ with a solo 140lb rider. Should be a 900lb spring.

Yea when I was in the service manual today I thought I read the stock spring was 743lb but not exactly sure what year that was for.

I have a 900lb spring on the Honda shock on the 86 1350. Will bottom out on the really big stuff. But I weigh 268.

Ahhhh, you use the longer number to look it up then. I used the short number series and didn't get a hit.  Okay, so this spring it waaaaaaay off then.  Anybody have a stock spring they wish to sell?

756 lbs.

Maybe, the shock is blown and they were trying to rely completely on the spring for suspension. It seems weird they would almost double the spring rate. Then again maybe the po rode two up all the time.

This is for a 1991 I can't seem to find the 1989 information right now.

Found the 1100 specs. What is interesting is the 1100 came with a 868 lb spring. Even though it was about 30 lbs lighter than the 1991

Got any used springs kicking around the shop Robert?

I had a look yesterday. I have two shocks here; an early model and a late model neither have springs on them. I can order you a eibach spring and get it headed this way let me know what rate you would like and I can see if Eibach has it in stock.

I have a stock shock that I pulled off of the 84. Still felt really good when it was on. PM me if interested! I'm not sure if the spring will fit or not, but if it does...

I think the spring off the 84 is too long for teh 89-90 models. Joe has a 6 inch spring on there now and the 84 spring is 6.87". It may coil bind when installed on the shorter shock body.

Good to know Robert.  So I need to shop for 89 and up shocks/springs?  No earlier shocks have springs that fit my model year?

When you get that rear shock straightened out along with your front shock work your doing its going to feel like a completely different bike. The next RPM rally should be a much safer ride. You must have had a hell of ride last year through the bumpy sections.

Travis, I always knew the suspension was off. I could feel something was wrong but wasn't experienced enough at diagnostics to know what was wrong.  Yes, last Fall I had several "oh shit" moments.  Now in hindsight, it's apparent the suspension was not working.  There were several things wrong with my forks that Robert fixed in addition to changing to RPM fork valves and springs.  I'm really looking forward to riding it again.  The ride to Hayfork should be a pleasure.  I had a seized bearing in the wishbone as well.  Robert has been busy this week working on my suspension parts.
