WANTED TO BUY:

OEM Exhaust System

I have my 9,000 original mile 1985 FJ1100 in the shop and I am going have them replace the Yoshimira pipe with factory original exhaust.

I'm bringing her back to full stock so if you have one for sale, know where one is for sale or have any recommendations...I'm interested.

I want it super clean or even NOS

Thanks all!

Welcome aboard. This is the right place for the best FJ advice left on the planet. I recommend you browse through the RPM website for parts and this forum for ideas.

Hi, And welcome.

Some one should have a set in the shed taking up space. Just curious, I know you said you wanted to go back to original, which is cool, but wondering if it is worth putting more weight on the bike?

Also please remember this is an international forum, so a location might be handy. Otherwise welcome again and keep your Kookaloo on.

The 84/85 system uses special double wall head pipes that have a black chrome plated finish. These are extremely hard, near impossible to find in good condition. The chrome finish pits and the inside tube cracks. If you do find them without cracks, you will find them hard to get them dipped with a new black chrome plating due to their double wall construction.
The collector box is no problem to find.
The 2 exhaust cans in reasonable condition can be found...maybe...to restore them to a concourse quality you may need to reskin the stainless steel jacket on the cans .....to find them in good condition or NOS good luck.

Welcome to the forum mate, and welcome to the FJ world (if it is new to you).

You'll find plenty of advice and helpful hints.

To go back to full stock is great. I'm most of the way there with one. However, there are some things full stock make riding a teensy bit irritating, and are not as safe as a minor, imperceptible mod.

#1, wire the petcock if it is not done already. Check Pats tag line for a link.
#2, replace the OEM rubber brake lines with steel braided. You can keep the OEM look by putting the original rubber sheath over the braided lines, including the dust boots. You can also leave the anti dive connected and plumbed. Even concourse inspectors miss this update.
#3, replace the OEM front fork springs with straight weight springs and use the gold emulators. As above the anti dive can remain. It will also give you a little more fork oil capacity rather than blanking off. Again, unless someone takes the forks apart, they'd never know (except the ride is waaaay better)
#4, do the timing advance (files section).

As Pat mentioned, the exhaust system is very hard to find. I stripped Japan of all their available original cans, headers and collectors for my bikes. There were some in Germany, but they cost more that the US foreign debt. Mark is right about the weight, you slightly change the earths orbit when you put them on.

A cheat would be to use the XJR1300 headers, they look like the double wall (nice and fat), are readily available, and could be black chromed if in good nic. I'm not sure about the fit.

For the cans, if no good 1100 ones are available you may be able polish and then wet/dry 1200 OEM cans to achieve the same look, but you'd need a 1200 collector to make it all fit. I've not done this, but it was my plan before I found all the stuff I needed in Japan (complete set with 600 miles, but the headers were pitted and need some love before re chroming).

My '85 headers were silver in color, not black.  I did have them jet hot coated in the silver color....then the dreaded cracked inner tube occurred.  Still have the complete set somewhere in the barn, including the cans and box (which was also JH coated).

Years ago on my '85, I fixed a cracked double wall header with a strategically placed small self tapping screw which cleared up the death rattle. Worked well for a year before I happened upon a set of '86 single wall headers. Pretty sure I read that tip here.

The header pipes will interchange without issue, but I don't think the collector box will work with the 84-85 mufflers. It has been quite some time back when I was designing the RPM exhaust system. I believe I found the 84-85 1100 collector box muffler outlets are at a different angle than the 86-95 1200 boxes. The mufflers will not interchange between the boxes and fit the mounting points.

Randy is right, there is a difference between collectors. The 1100's had slightly longer collectors than the 12's.

If you are getting 1200 headers and collector, you can polish 1200 mufflers.

Here's a pic of the underside of a slightly worn and pitted 1200 muffler. I just spent 30 seconds with 800 grit wet and dry (it was wet) to see how hard it would be to change. Very easy it turns out. I might be hard to see, but you will remove the black chrome back to the stainless. Scotchbrite will give you the satin lustre of OEM exactly as per the originals. You'd need to experiment with different scotchies to find the right grit/colour.

I've put '86/'87 collector on mine. At least it was advertised as one. I didn't see any difference. It was only heavier than mine with some aditional things inside, that's all (or the old one was so rusted that it got lighter).

What mufflers do you have Ivan? If the part number on the muffler begins with 36Y it's 1100. Anything other means 1200 spec.
