F up?

So, I rebuilt my engine for my '86.  Things went really well thanks to the help I received from Randy!  Installed the engine, hooked everything up, double and triple checked fasteners, electrical.  I then put in my oil to the full mark... a little over 3.1 litres (3.4 quarts)...  Fired right up with no coaxing.  Took a bit to burn off oil and to get it to run smoothly (getting the fuel to flow as the carbs were also rebuilt --3-4 minutes).  I was so preoccupied with this that I did not realize that the oil light was on.  I shut it down only to realize I was a litre low!! I put a litre in and fired it up again.  Light went off.  Did I F anything up?  There are no odd noises, rattles... The engine runs incredibly smooth!

Nope, no worries. I think you're fine. I've done the same thing with my Porsche motors (also air-cooled).

A quart low is still plenty of oil to lube the engine at idle. I am not sure where the low oil level and higher revs become dangerous for the engine. But the oil is picked up from the bottom of oil pan so the oil pump did its job.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Hey Mark.  The problem is I did rev it a little to keep it running until it finally cleared itself...

You could rev it to 5k for an hour with that much oil. Ride that SOB and enjoy your hard work.

Read this.

I don't mean to be dismissive of your concerns. I know I fret for the first several hours of run time on my race motors. These FJ motors are very robust, and just keep on running. I would keep your rpm's reasonable for a break-in period, and listen for odd sounds, but once you're comfortable, I would run it as hard as you like.
