Hi all...

Just wondering where you guys get your screens from? Is there anywhere that make any that look similar to the originals?

Most I have seen are smooth, not like the OEM ones.

I know... so many question!!!  :pardon:

Cheers

Mine had a screen with two vertical ridges moulded in it. It cause very annoying buffetting. I found a smooth screen on ebay in the UK. Had been looking everywhere for a while and it was one that was reasonable in price AND postage. There was a firm in Queensland that made them for our model but they sold out of them and didn't make any more (that may have changed). I can't recal their name. Here is a pic of the annoying screen.
By coincidence, this morning I was browsing ebay and I came across this. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-FJ1200-WINDSHIELD-TINTED-PANEL-FJ1200-1992-MODEL/143004109448?hash=item214bb58a88&LH_ItemCondition=3000

Unfortunately, as our FJ's get older, there are less and less available parts. Especially bodywork.

Windscreens on the other hand do still have a few manufacturers offering a few variations. The 'Finned' windscreen is for the 1991 and later models and was not offered in North America, we got the smooth version. To the best of my knowledge, there is no aftermarket Finned version available. Here are a few Websites that offer FJ1200 windscreens.

MRA makes a few versions http://www.proaccessories.com.au/products/mra.htm

Eagle Screens is an Australian manufacturer http://www.eaglescreens.com.au/

Ermax windscreens https://www.ermax.com/Yamaha/FJ-1200/FJ-1200-1991-1999.html?egap=products-by-bike&id=1020

Power Bronze http://www.powerbronze.com.au/index.html

The first photo is of the MRA Touring
Second photo is The Ermax High windscreen on a 1989
Third photo is the Power Bronze Flip screen
Fourth photo is the MRA Vario-Touring adjustable spoiler
Last photo is the 3rd eBay listing. brown tinted standard windscreen.

I personally like the Finned windscreen. The combination of my height, seating position and helmet shape, I get no buffeting at all.

eBay offerings!!

Hi ya Krusty... thanks for yr reply..

I have been digging around and have scrolled through most of the usual places... the postage cost is just ridiculous but not much we can do about that... I did see the one on eBay... thanks.

Mine is still there... its an original finned type... so you think the smooth ones are a quieter ride? Im not sure if i can polish mine up any better but its very brittle... so im worried ill bust it... anyway... just getting some thoughts and advice... so thank you...

Eric

I have heard of a few guys polishing their OEM touring screens with good results. Not sure of the products used.

Someone may be able to chime in here?

Cheers Fred...

I did see yours... so is yours a touring flip one or standard? And did you notice a difference in the wind noise from the original one?

I have seen the places you mentioned... but again... the damn postage is a killer....  I sent off an email to Eagle and Powerbronze... and the one from Pro Accessories seem reasonable.. so will see what comes back.

Thanks  :good2:

Noel did a nice job on his screen http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=15556.msg157088#msg157088

OMG!!! Noel is the man I need to talk to!!  :good2: His screen is amazing!!! I have used his method on lights a while back so I was going to have a crack... I think mine is too far gone but hey... whats the worse thing that will happen? It will crack and ill get another one.... a non original one...  :cray:

Thanks Mark... options are always welcome...

In my experience, most windscreen are made from Acrylic or ABS plastic. My finned windscreen is different and reminds me of the characteristics of Lexan. Very hard and not very flexible. Mine was very milky and had a bit of crazing. I attempted a polish job on it using an automotive headlight polishing kit.this is the kit I used, I am sure similar kits can be found in Australia.

I don't have a good photo of the before, but here is an after.... it came out pretty good... not as good as Noel's though.

I only did the outer side. The inner side needs to be done to look even better.

I'm not sure what tools and materials are available to you but here at home I bought a selection of 3" foam polishing pads from a detailing supply business.  With an adaptor they chuck up into one of my cordless drill motors.  That makes a low stress polishing rig.  Much less likelihood of cracking or damaging your windscreen.

If it makes any difference, my screen was damaged as well.  My thinking is that the Ergo touring was the choice I made.  Nice screen, it fit just like OEM and a comfortable ride.
