Hi all. I just picked up at 1990 FJ1200A. PO dropped it while hitting drunk pedestrians at slow speed. Intake pod is scratched, not smashed. Charged the battery, changed the gas, and it started right up!!! Just got some parts yesterday... I like to do my own work. Plugs, brakes, clutch slave cylinder seals, clutch master reservoir cover and screws (why do all these screws SUCK on every bike I've ever had and always strip?!?!), Rotella T6, oil filter, air filter, etc... need a new chain thinking about D.I.D. 110link 530? Not sure if thats right... Anyway, heres the pic and old craigslist post!  :good2: :good2: :good2:

p.s

I like this video description of the FJ, especially since I found a Legends mini racer with this engine in an abandoned rock quarry one time and the last but the last two minutes are the best.

And here's me picking it up with my 1990 4Runner

I am curious about this ABS system. Thinking about removing it.

The short answer is Japan improved the Philips bit design and called it Japanese Industrial Standard or JIS for short. A JIS screwdriver or bit will work very well if it has not been rounded out by using a Philips drive.

Welcome sekter1. The important part of your post has not happened yet. When you get the mechanics sorted out and start riding... Then the important posts begin. Don't rush it or go cheap on safety like chains. 530, 110 links is good for stock gearing.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Welcome to the Forum  :hi:

The 1990 model does not have the ABS system installed.

Mark touches on it, but I will go further. Do not go cheap on the chain. There have been instances where chains have failed and destroyed FJ engines. The FJ that you just purchased is known to members here on the forum (Fintip's FJ that he purchased in South Carolina and rode to Texas) It has a 1350cc Big Bore kit installed. The added Horse power and torque should get the best chain available. This is what I highly recommend

https://www.cyclegear.com/parts/ek-chain-530-zvx3-chain This is the chain that I had on my 1297cc FJ and I put close to 20,000 miles on the chain with very little stretch.

It comes with a rivet style master link that when installed properly makes your new chain and endless chain. No worries of the master link loosing it's clip and coming apart.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping someone would recognize the bike.

FJMonkey, I used JIS drivers, but it always seems that they don't work :( Anyways, got some new screws delivered today. So no biggie.

Fred, I was wondering why I couldn't find any of the ABS components!
Also thanks for the link on the chain. I've done a few rivet master link chains and I always prefer this style to the clip retainer type.

Randy, thanks for the link to Kyle's post. Seems like a nice fella with some adventures under his belt.

Just installed a new oil filter and cover/bolt o-rings, and also installed the refreshed clutch slave cylinder today (2 new seals and thorough cleaning), but can't seem to pull fluid with my Mighty-Vac... I'm thinking maybe the lines are clogged, as the fluid in the master cylinder reservoir is MUUURKY mud color  :dash2:

I'll try to remember to take pics.

Thanks again!

After some maintenance today, the spark plugs i pulled had the following gaps:

1)0.003"
2)0.030"
3)>0.035"
4)>0.035"

uhhh yeah, the one spark plug was bent like a hook and I thought it was touching at first glance, but it ran like that in the driveway somehow.....
Good thing i was replacing them, not just checking.  :good2:

The bleeder valve screw drain hole was blocked up with petrified brake-fluid. Seriously it almost broke the safety pin i used to poke thru.

Now I gotta deal with it not turning over, even after I had it running earlier today. Didn't ride it. Now I can't jump it even from my truck. Just solenoid click. I checked the ground strap just visually, looks okay. Even tried making a makeshift ground strap straight to the frame to engine bolt. "click" :(

any theories?
