Mike,

I had Metzlers on my 1985 when I got it, plenty of tread left, but they were old tires.  Locked up the rear wheel twice, without trying very much.  Getting Sport Demons was like getting a whole new bike, and I mean much better than the regular "new tires" feel.  The Pirellis were confidence-inspiring.

I believe your only choices for 16" fronts will be Avon radials (if available), or Metzlers.  If I ever get a 17" front wheel, I will be replacing everything forward of the steering head bearings in one swell foop,      handlebars and all, on an eBay special.
Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

Only commenting since you've already settled on the Sport Demon and aren't shopping for "the best tire for my FJ". I'm on my second front Sport Demon 120/80-16, starting in 2014 on my 1984. I've never had radials but the Sport Demon came recommended from a local FJ1100 rider and I was not disappointed. Compared to the Battlax it replaced, the feel on slow corners so you can adjust your line if necessary is much better, eg. for bad spots in the road or debris/oil. That alone was nice. They don't track tar snakes either :)
