The below (all the way on the bottom), was a reply posted in the Ban All Assault Rifles poll/thread in an area that is not viewable unless your a member who signs in.

A valid reply to the general state here in my opinion. I was the one that posted about the assault rifle ban. It's a topic in a non-FJ area, one that has been here that pre-dates my arrival.

To Ed:

The door has always swung both ways here, and you're free to leave if you're disinterested in this site, because of the reasons that you state. However, you are also free to stay here and start your own posts about FJ-related topics, and resurrect the camaraderie that you feel is lacking here. If you follow through and leave, good luck to you. Regardless of your feelings about it, you will be missed.

Marty

From me, and to others who may find interest:

For a long time now, my feeling is that there has been a substantial number of silent, or semi-silent members, who love coming here, for their daily enjoyment that has  been provided by a core number of contributers. A number of those contributers have now moved on, and the task of keeping this site interesting with FJ-related topics, interesting Ride Reports, and non-Trump bashing, non-gun banning posts have left with them. Any remaining like members here, are probably just getting tired, trying to keep this site afloat for the daily enjoyment of the passive members who don't contribute, which is there option too. But what does that leave in the long run?

If you are a member like Ed who has had enough of the lack FJ-related material here, or the lack of camaraderie, then instead of leaving, you could stay on and breath new life back into this site. The template for doing so, is the history of what has been posted here over the years.

Ed's reply...

As a side note, I've enjoyed coming here for FJs and 2 wheeled fun/camaraderie for 9 years. That has been missing here for quite a while, instead becoming politics and Trump bashing. And I've been less and less interested and invested here. I guess I won't really be missed. I have to say I don't miss any of this when I browse elsewhere.

Hey Ed I hope you stay. I have contributed to one of the political threads. Lately. Because it is something that I have to deal with on a daily basis. But I too miss the lack of Fj content. But you have to remember it's winter here so other than people doing builds. Not much happening with Fjs. I haven't contributed anything Fj related, because I have been trying to get this house/shop built for so long. But I will get back to building my turbo bike. Will be posting as much as I can about that instead of my house.

Like I said have to remember winter here. And we are all a little stir crazy. Because we can't get on the Fjs and ride.

For most of the discussion websites that I have joined, they have a way of making all forums visible on the "Forums" page, but posts to some "controversial" forums do not show up as New Posts to all members.  You can still click on the "controversial" forums if you wish, and participate there, but the average member does not see that content unless they go look into that forum.

Admins: Can we get that same set-up here?  If not, I believe we need more FJ riders and members, rather than needing our own forums for politics or guns.

My $.02 worth.
Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

Yeah If you could mark the ones you don't want to read. So you don't have them come up as new posts. Don't know if that's possible?

I enjoy the Trump-bashing. It's fun to watch the futility of the arguments against him.

But I understand how others might grow weary of it, especially those trying to bash him.

I've enjoyed the debates, and I participate because I generally have respect for opinions here, and value the interactions. I look forward to the teasing and banter when we do actually get together to ride and hang out. The depth of some folks' dismay is unfortunate to me. I think it's a sad day when we can't have political differences without taking our ball and going home every time a criticism is lobbed. We've really become thin skinned these days. I don't know who's to blame, really. I wonder if the frustration of the Trump haters who just can't believe how he keeps winning causes them to disengage, or the frustration of the Trump supporters that they can't even have a discussion with the other side without being immediately called a racist, misogynist, homophobe, etc.,

Whatever the case, it's unfortunate we can't talk about anything but motorcycles. I think the folks who can't seem to figure out how to avoid the touchy conversations just want to be offended, and petulant.

Yeah If you could mark the ones you don't want to read. So you don't have them come up as new posts. Don't know if that's possible?

Are you not using the "UNREAD" button at the top? That's the easiest way to parse out threads you want (or don't want) to read.

Aren't the political discussions in the political forum?
And therefore easily avoided, if one choses?

As far as less FJ content, these are old bikes now, with mostly older riders, people move on, interests change etc.
If you're starting with a small group, this will show up very quickly.

Just a thought.

I can hit the mark all as read. But then they all get marked. I can just click on the ones I don't want to read. And click back easy enough. But just wanted to be lazy and mark the ones I don't want to read. So they don't keep popping up every time someone posts to it. Don't know if that's possible. Just a lazy man's thought.

Huh?

I use the Unread page as the source for my tab. Simply don't click the thread you have no interest in...

2 cents worth from across the pond ....

I have seen this before on bike related forums and things get crazy. People get offended and leave for reasons unrelated to the actual core of the forum.

I come here for advice and hopefully to give advice if I can. I love working on my bikes and the FJ is a pleasure to work on and I am looking forward to getting it on the road.

I run a forum here in Ireland for the Honda CX and GL models.

We dont allow any discussions about politics or religion or any controversial topics. Its about the bikes and I keep it that way.

It's interesting... there has been more activity on this forum in the last several weeks than there has been in a long time. I've found that the discussions are fine until someone decides to start calling people names, denigrating them or being just plain disrespectful to someone simply because of their beliefs. It's a phenomenon I've noticed particularly with regard to our current political climate in the US. The "educated" elite liberals spend a lot of time trying to establish their superiority through ridicule or outright dismissal of opposing perspectives. Most, if not all of the supporters of the current administration that I've come in contact with have no problem with a vigorous, reasonable debate. Those opposed, however, fall into the same pattern of disrespect very early into the discussion.

Having said all that, I suppose there is the reality that folks easily offended may tend to avoid the forum, and that is a side effect that impacts the RPM business, and I don't want to contribute to that. I contribute motorcycle content here, and appreciate those that do the same. I'm not interested in alienating any of them. I'll be less vigorous in my political contributions in the future for that reason.

I'll be the first to admit to having some strongly held opinions...One of them being my enjoyment of the FJ!  I've met many friends through my association with this motorcycle, strange how a machine can have that effect.

Well here I go again, beating the non responsive stallion.
I was thinking there might be a way to mark certain threads keep them from appearing in my unread list.
But obviously there isn't. Like I said I'm just too lazy. To keep click back and forth to get them off my unread list
