Scary bottom end noise! -surprising cause...

The other day I planned for a great ride, putting aside some time for it, finished all my jobs, consigned the child to someone else, bought the wife a cask of plonk, the day was mine, nothing can stop me now!

All geared up, roll out the bike, start her up.... and whats that bloody noise!?  From the bottom end is this really tinny rattle, like bits of metal getting thrown around the crankcase!  I rev it a little to see if it increases, sort of... Bugger.

The rides over before it started!  A cursory examination finds nothing wrong, could it be a bearing?  Could something have snapped off?  did I do anything recently?  I decided to google research in case another poor FJer had been struck by the same malady, and all the suggestions were bad news.

So before I started ordering gasket sets and a recon'd bottom end, I thought maybe the rivets are loose on the slip on exhaust pipe, they rattle when worn... Seems my son has found a hiding place for his cars....

And another!

Fishing out the offenders solved the problem!

Could your son be trying to tell you something?  Sputter stop......

TexasDave

That was very funny. Seems like just yesterday you posted a picture of a handsome baby boy. They really do grow up fast.

A pistol is like a parachute, if you need one and don't have one you will never need one again.

Looks like you've got a bit too much slack in your chain......

You might want to adjust that before your ride.

Oh, I see, he jammed them in there in reverse. Sweet, I love an easy fix. just swap them around the right way.

He installed them properly, they are more aerodynamic to aid in the proper exhaust flow & scavenging.

Gareth, based on my experience, it is obvious your son is fascinated, and will have a future in motorcycles.
46 years ago my son flushed his prized matchbox car down the toilet.

Today he's a plumber.  A very successful $$ plumber.

Couple of years ago, had the CBX parked out in the barn.  Decided to take it out for a spin but it was running rough.  Blipped the throttle a few times thinking to get all the 6 carbs working only to get about a dozen acorns shooting out the tail pipe shot gun style.  Would have maimed you if you were standing behind it!  I learned to put a tail pipe plug in after that, now I just need to figure out how to keep the damn chipmunks out of the air box!

My wife had some corn in the garage for the deer. In the spring went to start the chopper.. first piston fires. Comes around to the second and abruptly stops. Shooting some corn out the exhaust. The mice carried the corn across the garage. Jumped 8" off the ground into the exhaust. Filled the one side full. Including filling the cylinder. WTF.

G'day,

On further investigation I found handfuls of nuts and bolts, small blue stones from the drive, and three plastic ties.  No way is the little bugger going in the shed again, just yesterday I stopped him chasing the dog with a ball pein hammer!

I think he is trying to tell me it's too loud...

I get the last laugh though, when he comes of age, I will bequeath the FJ to him, trying to keep her alive will put him off bikes forever, that'll bugger him!

I remembered when I was a teenager I owned a Suzuki GT380, two stroke triple, well she had points, and being a useless teenager I was trying to get the timing right, then after kicking her over endlessly trying to get her to start, a huge back fire and one of my home made baffles shot out the pipe!

After I got up off the floor from laughing too hard, the smoke cleared and I found my mate on the floor crying in pain, the baffle had hit him in the shin, a little round scar still remains to this day...
