Guys, I was hoping to get some info on a couple things about  the CDI box on my 89.  What type indication would there be if the box was failing,or is a suddenly dead thing?   And , i came across a known good box for an 89 #YB151 ...not so sure if that box# covers all 89s ?   The bike is stored now and not so easy to get to and remove rite now.  thanks.

Hey TC, I don't know if this helps you...a quick check shows that Yamaha used the same igniter box on all the FJ's from 1989 to 1993

You should be ok.

Re: Trouble shooting ignition woes, you need to rule out all other possibilities before considering changing the igniter box.
1) Check plugs and wires 2) Check coils. 3) Check pick up coil. 4) Check run/stop switch that provides power to the igniter box.
In my experience the FJ has a very durable robust igniter box, however, I have read that in the rare case they do break, the igniter box flat out stops working, totally dead, with no advance symptoms. Like an on/off switch.

Stay tuned....Others will chime in on their experiences

Something else can give you an indication of a bad igniter box. Turn the ignition on and you don't hear the fuel pump clicking, and you don't hear the starter solenoid click when you push the start button. The culprit could be the Main Relay, located on the left hand side next to the flasher relay. If the relay craps out, you will not get power to the starter solenoid or the fuel pump relay. I had this relay fail on me once. This is a $48.00 part that can be purchased new.

RPM may have one of these on the shelf. Number 3 in the drawing https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1989/fj1200w/electrical-1
