Specify a 11" long hose and hang it on the left side like here:

Need to dial up or down compression?  Easy peesey.  Reach down for a 2 finger adjustment

Pat,
That rear fender / chain guard looks great -- NWS Hugger??  If so, which model fits an FJ?

Thanks

Mark

Pat,
Thanks for the reply.  I was hoping not to hack up the side cover but it seems to be unavoidable to get it mounted on the subframe.  So where you put it there's no issue with hitting the hugger at full compression, especially on the chain side?  And my reservoir requires a 1/2" wrench to adjust compression...what have you got for two finger adjustment?

Here's where I hung it for now-I know not pretty...

Mark, I have a YZF1000 Thunder Ace swing arm (courtesy of Mark Rittner) The hugger is from a UK firm called Pyramid Plastic, here's the link:

The left side was my choice so I could make adjustments on the fly with my left hand. See some twistys coming up? Reach down and dial up the compression. Getting on the freeway ? Reach down and dial down the compression. Not as nifty as the handlebar mounted controls the new bikes have nowadays, but still pretty easy.
The notch you see in the hugger is due to the needed clearance of the subframe tube, not the reservoir hose.

Yea, believe me, I did not like the idea of hacking up a rare '84 side panel for the reservoir ( I have a spare) but the reservoir needed to be rotated outwards to clear the hugger. When rotated, the side panel will not flush fit unless trimmed.  If you put the reservoir on the right side you should be fine.
The Penske reservoir came the a knurled knob, the gold thingy in the picture, dunno if you can get one for yours. I would give Jim Lindemann a call or the folks at Traxxion and ask.

Fret not laddie, LA Mike put a nice hugger (GSXR?) on his '89 FJ swing arm.
A very clean installation, looks oem.

LA Mike, ya gottcha ears on?  Any help you can give Mark?

Mike you should do a write up with pictures and post it here in the Mods section. Lots of folks have asked me about the hugger only to be disappointed when I tell them that it only fits the TAce swing arm.
Now that we have our ass end up in the air (so to speak) your solution is way cool.

Cheers!

Great news Pat thanks, I'll wait to hear from LA Mike.  He's even got the same year and color bike as I do.  Perfect!

racerman_27410

i tucked mine on the subframe rail on the right hand side .

under the side cover in the space where the original shock adjuster was.

it did take some tuning but i eventually settled on two setups

touring settings (with luggage )

and sport settings (without luggage).

It only takes a few moments to set everything up pre ride (did i tell ya its a good thing to write the settings down?).

I adjust the front end to match the shock also so there isnt any need of me having the rear resevoir exposed.

KOokaloo!

(Pat, I cannot BELIEVE you are riding around with that notched sidepanel.... tsk tsk tsk  :unknown: )

Funny you said that about doing a write up, I was reading the post early before heading out to the garage to work on the bike today so I took the camera with me. I had only plan to clean the carbs, reinstall my wheels( new Pirelli rubber ) :good2: and finally mount my Wilbers shock that have had for 16+ months.

Anyway took some notes, measurement and pics of GSXR1100 wheel swap I did 4 yrs age and of hugger install. Will post writeup & pics when I get a chance.

I  tucked my res under the rh side cover as well, hose clamped to the upper frame rail.

I have to remove the side cover to adjust it, but once dialed in I found I left it alone. set for sport riding became the 2up setting as well.

Finally made a bracket for my shock resevoir out of some band iron I had.  Used the 8 mm tab w/welded nut under the side cover & the 6 mm hole in the muffler hanger that were there.  Low enough that the side cover comes off & on no problem, and didn't have to hack the cover up.

smokamoto, I notice you're only running 1 clamp on the res.  I'm betting there isa reason that Penske ships 'em with 2 clamps.  Maybe you need another clamp ...  Otherwise, very nice bracket!  You may have inspired me to do better.
