Ok picked up aFJ1100 as a non goer , the PO said he ride it parked it and it just wouldn't start but was running fine before that .
So I pulled the carbs and cleaned everything with compressed air and re installed everything to the same settings as I pulled it out
The diaphragms have all been repaired numerous time on each one bit I couldn't see through any pin holes holding up to the light ...possible problem ??
I then reinstalled these

When I connected up my truck battery to the bike to see what was happening when power was applied , all lights came on but when pressing the start button the motor turned over but it turned over what I would consider a bit slow , I did notice what looked like a secondary earth cable coming from the front area( I presume a bolt to earth) going to the battery negative cable , it doesn't look like a standard thing...another problem maybe ??

Where do I begin .....can I diagnose with the diaphragms I have in the carbs or do I have to just bite the bullet and buy new ones

Any hints good people ?

Cheers

OK, you need 2 things to make an engine run, spark and fuel. Start with the spark, remove the tank, remove the spark plugs, get new one as they are cheap. Now with the new one put one on cylinder 1 and check for spark, no spark check electrical until you find what is wrong.

If you have spark, now you can check for fuel from the carb.

Gages,

Corrosion on electrical connections can act just like a bad battery.  Clean both ends of each cable on the battery, and the battery terminals, down to shiny metal.  Clean the places where the cables are connected to the bike, as well.  The auto-parts shops will have a small wire brush ("toothbrush") with fine-wire bristles which works well in close quarters.  Buy several.  If the slow cranking persists, you may have a bad starter solenoid, or a bad starter.  When you have a good battery connected, use a separate cable to jump directly to the starter (briefly!), to crank the engine.  If that trick makes the starter work well, then the starter is good but the solenoid is weak.  I believe you can still get new solenoids.  If you do need a new starter, there is an upgraded starter available now, using four brushes instead of two,

There is a red plug on the old FJs, on the generator output line (near the generator) that likes to melt.  Replace that weak connector with a modern and heavy-duty connector, if you find the old one to be corroded or damaged.

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

First check for spark on plugs. If there is spark turn off the lights (to give more startingpower) and spray some startgas or carbcleaner into the airboxinntakes while you crank the engine. Then when she is starting to fire up run some more startgas thru her while she is running. Some time when the carbs have been off and drained for fuel it takes a little time to get the vacum to build up to suck the fuel from the carbs into the sylinders.and remember
to have the vacum line connected.good luck!
