My gauges are illuminated, but with a less than red(orange) needle, ever older eyes, and the glare from all of the Waffle House signs, I thought of upgrading the gauge lights.  Any suggestions short of a SpeedHut improvement.

Some of your lights may not be working. I like many here have installed LED gauge lights with good results. However, don't use LED for the low fuel or low oil, they need a standard bulb. An LED in these two places will be brightly light all the time.

Thanks.  What colors are the needles supposed to be?

I think they are Orange when not faded. If you repaint them use a translucent paint so the back lighting comes through.

The T10 super bright LED bulbs work well. You can get a bit fancy and get colored LED bulbs. I have tried Red, they worked pretty good

Cool.  The last time I messed with gauges was on an SR250 with a broken needle.  I took a tine from a KFC fork painted it red and epoxied it to the stub.
