Sometimes when I hit the button, I get nothing.  I can always start it eventually.  I am always in neutral.
My side stand switch is just there for looks, since it can't kill the engine.  I think that's due to the rewiring of the Dyna 2000 ignition.  Sometimes I pull the clutch lever a few times, and leave it pulled in.
Where do I start to troubleshoot?

Open and clean the switches, start, on/off etc... They may have not been cleaned since it was new. As a general rule, eliminate all the easy stuff first. Then work down the list of possible causes.
