Strange tyre wear -opinions?

Hello,

I recently bought a Bridgestone Exedra tyre off a tyre company.  After having it fitted and taking it easy, I discovered that it was quite slick!  I had a hellava scare passing a car in the wet, peeled out to pass and I must have hit the white centre line as the bike fish tailed badly.  This morning on the way to work I was pulling away from an intersection, not overly brisk, and I was wondering why the bike was over revving, only to discover the back was spinning!  Admittedly it had rained in the morning, and I was taking it easier than normal.

Now I know when you have new tyres you take it easy, wear them in etc.  Well I was doing that.  I looked at the tread upon getting to work and noticed some rubber "curling" off the tyre?  Have other people come across this?  I have never seen it before.

That's a hard-ass Cruiser tire, designed for high mileage. It's going handle like dog dung in the wet, and spin and melt like you've found out.

Did they suggest that tire to you or did you pick it out yourself?

If they did I would go back and ask them why they tried to kill you. And have them replace it at no cost.

If you did, wellllllll..... :pardon:

Well judging by the piss poor uninformed replies, obviously you guys have no idea either.  The tyre has not melted, I rode it to work and the temp was around 3 degrees centigrade, wet roads, and lotsa corners, not the conditions for melting tyres.
And it's not a cheap shit tyre, if you're gonna throw that stupid statement out there, back it up or shut up.
And if riding a Bridgestone Exedra is gonna kill me? again, back it up or shut up.

Maybe I should have put the question on a different forum...

I thought this tire thread was going to get rolling but it looks like it is going to be retired.   :pardon:

Ok I'll back it up. You put the wrong tire/tyre on your bike!

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/36495/pr/bridgestone-exedra-max-radial-rear-tire

Vulcans, Nomads, Valkyrie, VTX.  Do you see a pattern here?  It's a tire for bikes that weigh 200lbs more than an FJ.  Any tire will peel like that if you spin it up in the wet even at 3degC.  If you keep that tire on your FJ YOU run a good chance of KILLING YOURSELF.

You asked for opinions. You got them. THEY'RE JUST OPINIONS. Don't shit on people who give you what you asked for if it makes you feel like an idiot.  If your looking for affirmation - go to a confessional.

Which Bridgestone Exedra is it? They seem to come in different options as mentioned here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O8Fcybpl9c

I know nothing about these tyres but Paul is right on this point. Tyres run surprisingly hot in cold air temps and wet roads. I have tyre temp gauges on my bike and even under those circumstances my rear tyre temp will be around 35C just rolling down the road.
Spin it up and it will get real hot real fast.

Gareth, the circumstances you mention have caught me out too, even with sticky tyres. At highway speeds, particularly if the roads rough, the back wheel can be momentarily unweighted over bumps, add full power, wet road and..... I've done it often enough to be wary now every time I crank it on it to overtake in the wet, and do so with a bit less throttle.

In your case though your tyre just doesn't seem to have much grip if it's doing it that easily.

Mr. Blackstock,

FWIW, I changed to Pirelli Sport Demons, front and rear.  The improvement in handling was almost incredible.  It was like getting a whole new bike under me.
I hear that Avon radials might be even better, but I have not tried those yet.
Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

The tire melted from your burn out.  I have seen tires do this in the wet too as the steam generated from the friction cooks them.

The Bridgestone Excedra G702 that is pictured is a Cruiser tire. As stated, it is designed for bikes that can weigh 200lbs or more than your FJ. This tire is not meant for the FJ. It is way to hard (spinning under nominal power inputs), it will be very easy to break traction on a regular basis. About the only time this tire may be a benefit for the FJ, would be if you were riding from Sydney to Perth and back. 12,000km's out of this tire on straight roads should be easy to reach. I will agree with you....it is not a bad tire, it is just the wrong tire.

You have made some very harsh comments in the past. I seems like you are getting a small dose of your own medicine. Obviously that doesn't sit well with you.
