Handlebars hit fairing after repairs

I've repaired my 1992 FJ1200 fairing after a minor accident, but I have a bit of a concern. When I turn the handlebars to the full stop positions my index fingers get pinched between the grips and the fairing. I don't remember this happening before the accident. Would any members be so kind as to check this on your 91 - 93 FJ andlet me know how much space there is between the handlebars/grips and the fairing? Much appreciated.

mate can u post some pics of the issue? and of the repairs....

Either the handle bar is in a different place than it used to be, or the fairing is in a different place than it used to be, or both.  Kind of depends on the accident and the repairs. Did the bike crash into a car? Did it fall over on one side?

(You gave us a pretty vague description, which makes it hard to help you. "My head hurts. Any ideas what could be wrong?"  Is there a nail protruding from it? Are you hanging upside down from a seatbelt in a car that has left a trail of parts as it tumbled end-over-end through a shopping center? Are you just now waking up in a pool of vomit with a mostly empty bottle of Jack Daniel's clutched in one hand? Is there a marching band walking past you right now? Come on, man, help us help you.)

The easiest thing to do is sit on the bike and look at the two handle bars, and try to see what looks wrong. Maybe one bar is at a different angle than the other. Maybe the fairing looks like it's off to one side a bit, or further back, or pushed back from hitting something, or tilted up or down relative to how it looks on other FJs.

At the moment, I have the fairing off, trying to diagnose the tach registering double the actual rpms, so the best I can do for now is these pictures. I'm attempting to show the distance between the fairing bracket at its ends and the grips/brake lever. This is after I have adjusted it a bit to try to increase the distance between the grips and the fairing and trying to get it close to even on both sides. Two of the pictures show 1.5 inches between the inner limit of the grip and the end of the mounting bracket. The other two pictures show about 3/4 inch between the brake lever and the mounting bracket at the shortest point of measure. I'm thinking that, once the fairing is reinstalled, this will give a bout an inch of clearance between grips and fairing, and stop pinching my index finger. This is the measurement that I am most interested in getting from an undamaged bike.

The accident involved the bike going down on the left side at low speed and sliding into a truck. The front fender and fairing, mostly near the headlight struck the truck and the bike came to a stop. I believe that the distortion is due to the mounting bracket being bent rather than the forks or handlebars being damaged.

If you have not already, check each side to the frame to compare and see if the upper stay was bent
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Looks like you have handlebar risers fitted as well which will decrease the gap from standard. I've got RPM risers fitted to my 93 and noticed on full lock side to side my left hand will just touch the fairing but the right hand doesn't. I've never fallen off or the previous owner to my knowledge so either someone before that did and bent it a fraction or it was just made that way.

For the record, full lock to the right and there's 20mm between the left grip where you hold it and the fairing, and full lock to the left there's 25mm between the right grip and fairing measuring straight up both sides. I can take a picture if you want.

Too young to be old but old enough to know better.

I checked the position of the fairing with respect to frame bolts and it was the same on both sides, so I decided to reassemble. I must have gotten it mostly right because bolt holes lined up much better than before as I was putting on the fairing, instrument cluster cover, side pieces, windshield etc. The pinching of the fingers is not a problem anymore either. Partly because there is a bit more space and partly because the top of the fairing is a little closer to the inside edge of the grips. My numbers are now close to the 20 - 25 mm that Bones stated in the previous post.

Thanks for all the advice.

might consider rotation the levers downward a little on the bars to give u more space as well....

If it was not so hard crash, I'd suspect, that your handlebar is bent.
Look from the top of your handlebars if lines pictured are same on both sides, I mean parallel and in same angle.
My handlebar was bent after one drunk f*+ker kicked my bike of the main stand, so I assume that handlebar is weak point here.  :unknown:

Yes that's exactly what I was thinking the 1st time I read this Post a week or so ago ,, BENT HANDLE BAR ,,  It does not take much to bend the Handle Bars when the Bike falls over ,,The good part is that it is easy to fix ,Just remove the End Weight ,Rubber Grip and Brake or Clutch master Cylinder, then slide a bit of pipe over the Bar and bend it back to straight . I have bought 2  spare sets of Handle Bars (and each time they turned up at least one of the Bars has been bent)..that's what I would check out first,,,,  that's M O

I had the same problem a couple of years ago on my '92.  I traced it to the connector to the ignitor box.  There was some oxidation on the pins and a bit on the coil connections.  I first cleaned the coil connections with no result.  After cleaning the connector with contact cleaner, emory cloth, and even some light scraping with a "jewelers file" it stopped and haven't had an issue since.  I also lubed it with some electrolytic grease.
