Floppy footpegs?

It seems like the footpegs on my 89 move up and down quite a bit. It actually feels like my feet are tilted outward when resting on them.

I'm trying to upload a video to you tube, but it's being a bit of a PITB right now. I'll post it once you tube is working.

I would estimate the end of the peg moves through and arc of 3-4 inches. I know they are rubber mounted to help quell vibration, but this just seems excessive. The bolts are tight and the rubberized washers are as tight as they are going to get (although that doesn't mean they aren't worn and i just can't tell as I don't have any new ones for reference).

Is it normal for the footpegs on an FJ to move so much? It makes the bike feel like a wallowing sea cow when my feet are moving around on (what feels like) loose footpegs...

I changed mine to R1 pegs. More solid feel and they were adjustable as well

The wrong bolts are being used, I think and they are bottomed out assuming they are tight.

The bolts should be snug in the bushing; if not it is the wrong bolt.  Also check to see that the rubber in the foot peg is in good condition.

I'm assuming that wasn't just a "bolt on" affair?

Bushing in the rubber isn't moving. Seems to be movement in the rubber between the inner bushing and the outer housing of the mount....

Is the rubber disc behind the footpegs bracket there and in good condition?

Yes it was. just used the pegs and kept the parts mounted to the frame. If I still had the bike I would post some pictures

Funny you should ask, I was just out in the garage and pulled them off to make sure. The rubber is all there, but there is an indentation on one side. It is an 89 after all....;)

As a quick experiment, I added a washer under the rubberized washer that had a center large enough to clear the center "sleeve". I cranked it down and the foot peg is much firmer.

Only problem is it obviously pulled the footpeg bracket in and down over the sleeve, essentially crushing the rubber in the bracket itself.

So this weekend I think  I'm going  to make some delrin spacers on the lathe and see if I can tighten things up while maintaining them in thier mostly stock orientation.  I'm not really worried about vibration as I will still be retaining the rubber over the pegs themselves.

I thought about grabbing some used ones off eBay, but I'd probably ly just end up with the same soft rubber bushing issues again..

Ah, I see. My problem seems to be the brackets or what I think you're calling "parts mounted to the frame".....

Well heck.

I just ordered a used set of pegs and brackets off eBay for 30 bucks.

Even if they're no better than my current set, they've got a good set of peg rubber covers and mine are ratched so it's not a total loss even if the brackets make no difference.

Actually, with a spare set on hand, I may burn the rubber out of the worse ones and fill them back up with polyurethane.....;)

Just disregard my question. I just checked the parts diagram on boats.net for your 1989. It doesn't have the little rubber puck behind the footpeg bracket that the 3XW has. Carry on....

This looks like your FJ is going to fly away.
That is not normal for sure.

My new/used footpegs showed up yesterday.

Popped 'em on and the the side feels like a normal peg now. Very slight give when you put weight on it.

Oh side is much better, but still some excess movement. I believe it's the rubberized washers. The chrome one isnt bad, but there's lots of movement on the bolt that also holds the shifter. I'm going to try a small spacer to see if it tightens up any. If it does, I'll order up a couple new washers..
