FJ1200 vs FJ1100 rev limiting

I apologize if this was asked previously.

Does the FJ1100 CDI have the same rev limiting as the 89 FJ1200 (10,500rpm I think).

If not can a CDI from an FJ1100 plug directly into FJ1200 connectors.
First major bike in my life was a Mach III widow maker.
My Second permanent bike 1978 Z1R (owned since Dec 1977)
My Third permanent bike is the 89 FJ12 - nice and fast
Forth bike 89 FJ12 my totally standard workhorse
81 GPZ1100 hybrid - what a bike, built to sell but I can't part with it

Hi ,,I have no idea about the rpm limit on the CDI units ,,
but I can tell you that the CDI Units  are not all the same ,,
from the 1984  FJ1100 to the 1987 FJ1200,,the Bikes ran a  ""Analoge"" CDI Unit ,,
from 1989 FJ1200 to 1996 FJ1200,, the Bikes ran a ""Digital"" CDI unit ,,
The ignition pick ups inside the left side cover are different as well ,,, Analoge pre 87  and Digital their after ,,
hope that helps ,,

Bozo, why are you worried about rev limiters. With the FJ being a long stroke motor, there is a VERY good reason why you shouldn't rev it past redline, beyond that it has finished making power anyway so why would you want to?

Piston speed of an FJ engine at 10,500rpm is greater than an F1 engine doing 18,000rpm and piston speed is the limiting factor that every engine builder is bound by. The problem with exceeding that speed applies to all engines regardless, it is not FJ specific.

This has been discussed before with differing views, some were from memory 10,500 some were 11,000 some couldn't even find one. Even the lowest one at 10,500 is 1000 revs over the red line which to me defeats the purpose, if it's going to have one it should be set to cut in at the red line. I've taken mine up to around 10,000  but mechanical sympathy prevented me from revving any higher to try and find some limiter.

Thank for your replies, I was only curious. After porting the head with a high compression in the first two gears I do hit the rev limiter very quickly, I now have a speedhut tacho that lights up at 9,500rpm. I don't hold the revs for the sake of revving it actually hits the limiter under power. I agree I should keep it around 9,500rpm max, so sue me I like a drag here and there. Phil your answer is what I was looking for, thankyou

Does Speedghut know that in 3rd gear (wide open throttle) on an FJ you are hitting the Kookaloo zone? Damn right it should light up...

John, don't get the impression I was bagging you about thrashing you engine because that's not the case, Rev limits were discussed here some time ago with varying results. Don't worry, I give mine a good thrash now and again just not enough to hit the limiter that's if it even has one.

How did I get involved in this? I've been quietly watching from the sidelines.
John, you need to spend some time down here with us, then I may become a bad influence on you. How's Queensland treating you?
Sorry I didn't get to spend more time with you during the Rally, time just seems to disappear at events like that. We'll have to make up for it at Mudgee next year.  :drinks:

Pete, I'm jealous listening to stories of your bike and the fact that you never take it above 3,500rpm (above the redline) :sarcastic: :sarcastic: Glad to hear from you mate at least you know what I'm talking about. I hope I have time for the next rally.
