hello everyone, I'm new on here after doing some research on line for my 87 FJ1200. Terrific site for this great bike. I am having the well known petcock problems that you all probably have heard about before.I just have a question before I give up and purchase a new replacement. This one let fuel back into the carbs and into the motor. Also  the reserve switch does not work which doesn't really matter to me .I already drained the oil and changed filter , ect. I am trying to find out if there is another type of petcock I can put on this bike or a way to install a shut off and put a FJ1100 petcock on it. I know it is super tight under the tank for space but just wanted to check if anyone has been able to do something with installing a shut off or anything other than putting another stock petcock on it and possibly having problems again in a couple years..I'm not crazy about the vacuum petcocks.I have Pingels on my other bikes which I really like.Any info would be greatly appreciated .I've been going crazy with this issue trying to find info on it all. Thanks for taking the time to read this .

Old School,

Zwartie here used an electric solenoid fuel shut-off valve, which looks good to me.

He said the source was eBay, about US$30~$40.

If you run the solenoid power through a hidden toggle switch, that would be a good theft deterrent, too.  The bike might start, but it won't go far.
Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

You can put a Pingel on your early model FJ. Here's a string about doing it.

Good luck on adapting some kind of solenoid shut-off on an early model FJ. As you've found on your '87, there's not much room under the tank. The early models are a different animal in regards to this, when compared to the later models.

I'm away from the shop tonight, but I have both the pingle and Yamaha petcock in stock.

We sell a boat load of Yamaha over the Pingle.

Since no one told you this, I will. If you had flooded the engine, before cranking it, remove the spark plugs to expel the fuel if it is still in the cylinders.
Your petcock is not the only thing to blame - carburetor needles and seats need checking.
The easiest thing is to buy new original petcock. If you ride the bike constantly you won't have problems any time soon. Sitting is what kills such rubber parts.

Thanks guys for all your info. I did the following to the cylinders to get rid of any fuel left over. Changed plugs and carbs have been rebuilt. This bike sat for a while and for some reason I have always known about the quality rubber Yamaha uses. It seems to harden up and crack alot quicker than the other bikes I have owned.Randy may have both petcocks in stock  so I will probably be contacting him . thanks again.

I use the pingle. On mine. For access, I just bent the screen down on the top slot of the side panel. Don't even notice it. Randy has the correct mounting plate for the fj.

that's great. I really want a pingel on it. Do you have the stock  air box or individual filters? Just wondering if it will still work with the air box on mine. thanks

giantkiller

I don't have the stock airbox. The first thing I did to all the Fjs was take the airbox off. And put the uni pods on. They are cheap enough that I have a spare set also. So I always have a clean set to go on.

So I don't know if it would interfere.

Hi Guys, just a quick question.I have a pingel petcock with dual outlets.Does anyone know if this could be used on a 87 FJ1200 ?  As you know it  would also mean different fuel line routing but I have this petcock doing nothing on my shelf. Just  a thought. Any info appreciated.thanks alot.

Pat Conlon

Sure, I don't see why not.... just be careful with your fuel line routing.
