89 problem after dj kit

ok I have gone out for my first ride and here is what I have done.  Full D&D exhaust and dyno jet stage 3 withs pods, I have great power but it pops at idle?
I love the way she runs no dead spots that I can feel yet but that popping from the exhuast will it hurt anything?

When you say it pops at idle, do you mean just sitting there?  Or do you mean out riding and you roll off the throttle to idle?

Have you synched the carbs?

Also double check all the connections for air leaks (carb to boot and the vacuume taps). 

How close is the idle mixture?  When you rev it a little does it return quickly to idle?  Dip below idle and come back up?  Hang up a little over idle and slow back down? 

How fresh are your spark plugs?

Need better definition of pops at idle.  Pops on trailing throttle while riding are to be expected.  Popping/spitting through the carbs backwards isn't so good.

Which DJ kit did you use?  Did you change the pilot jets?  Where are the mixture screws set?  Do you have an ignition advance plate on the bike?  What altitude are you at?  What was the weather like?

well sounds like I am missing alot of info, I had a local shop install the dyno jet kit so it sounds like I will need to talk to them and get more info.  The poping is only at idle and out the exhaust, no noise from the carbs. I am in ohio so the weather is still cold 40s or so but the bike runs great at all speeds so I didnt know if it was a carb adjustment or normal with an aftermarket system.  Thanks for your reply.

I will run this tank of fuel out and replace the plugs and see what that does.  The noise is only sitting still and it has great throttle response but it will dip to 7 or 800 then come back to normal.  I have not done the carb syc yet because the shop said that I shouldnt have to with the rebuild.  This is my first FJ and all my info I can get is helpfull.  Just wanted to know what you guys thought before I go back to the shop clueless.lol

Sounds like it's a bit lean at idle.  I'd recommend turning the idle mixture screws about 1/2 turn out (counter clockwise) to richen up the idle a little.

Besides, if you spend money at the shop, you have less available for your next modificaiton!

i would get a morgan carbtune and synch those carbs.... quit letting other people mess with your bike.... you can do the work and know it's right.

after you synch the carbs a little tweaking on the idle mixture screws will get you right as rain... it should drop right back down to a steady idle after blipping the throttle.

you are letting the bike warm up fully and off the choke before doing any testing right ?

If it's only doing it a little, it doesn't annoy you, and the plugs don't read too hot after a few minutes of idling, I'd just let it be... but only after doing the usual work to ensure the bike is running as well as you can get it to run, carb synch, valve lash, etc etc.

Ok I emptied out the tank and some fresh fuel and went for a ride today, did not notice the popping at idle.  Maybe I was jumping the gun a little thinking something was wrong.  This will be my first year riding my FJ and right now I am speechless.
My buddy just bought an 01 FZ1 and I am pretty sure he his upset right now, why you ask well let me tell you!! its because he cant touch me!hahahahaha. It is amazing how much this thing just gets up and goes. 

Oh by the way the D&D exhaust sounds great, great tone great look and I will post some pictures later today.

Hey, thanks cdad! (not knowing your first name) A Very nice looking bike.
Question: Is the D&D connector pipe (midpipe) removable from the header? (pipe between header and can)
If it is, cool, I could shorten the midpipe so as to slide the can closer (so the support strap is closer to center point of the can) and possibly rotate the connector pipe upward so it hugs the side frame closer.

Thanks for the comments,and yes the D&D comes in 4 parts.  The header is two pieces and then you have the mid-pipe then the can.  It was kind of a pain to get it all lined up but I know it was worth it. The mid -pipe connects to the header right in front of the center stand(really close fit) but it works.  The can sounds really good down low kinda screams at 6 to 7000 rpms.  Not real loud just loud enough I think.
