How far on a tank of gas?

Hi guys,

I'm curious to hear what sort of milage you all get out of your various FJ's.. I did an experiment on the weekend and ran mine dry to see how far she'd go... It was all open road riding, 100 - 120k's without being particularly heavy on the throttle, and got 335k's (208 Miles) before it ran out. Fuel light was on from 240k's - which is where I usually fill up at - and the gauge dropped another 1/5 of a tank below the big 'E' before she started stuttering.. My bike, 92 non-ABS Japanese import, doesnt seem to have the cut-out to 3 cylinders to make you switch to reserve.. I always did flick it on as soon as the light came on anyway but I left it in the "ON' position just to see... ran all the way to empty without a hitch. Took 24 litres to fill her back up - 5L from my spare jug in the packrack and 19L at the next gas station 10k's up the road. Works out to14K's a Litre... Usually it's 250k's and 17L to fill back up. I fill on 91 RON Unleaded - haven't noticed a performance difference between that and our 96 RON.
I'm not sure on what's been done to the carbs if anything re jetting as I've never pulled them down but I think she's pretty standard apart from exhaust.. Knocking on 130,000 k's now or it could be 230,000 as I don't know the history before it got imported.
Anybody else done a similiar test? I'd be interested to hear any figures just for shits n giggles...

Happy riding!

Just an interesting point with Jap imports. They come "power restricted" as well as speed restricted. Check the carb mounts - if they each have two pairs of overlapping 5mm holes it is still restricted. The bores of the mounts are about 5mm smaller than the carb bores and offset. The little holes anti-tampering engineering to stop you just boring the mounts out. I am still looking for a way to plug the holes so I can ream them bores out. I know Harvy swapped his for a set of "real"ones and got better economy and more top end power. I doubt if the bike has done 230,000km unless it's been here a while. Most of the imports come in with less than 40,000. Mine only had 23,000km when it came in 6 years ago. If you still have the pathetic 180kmh speedo there is a simple fix to get more speed. I think it's still in the files section - it simply earths the connection from the ignition to the speedo to prevent it cutting out at 180kmh. Mine cranks around to what would be about 210 (tested in closed road conditions, of course :^) I haven't tried going faster than that but the power isn't really there at full revs due to the carb mounts.

I get about 42 mpg and go about 225 miles on a tank of gas, not that the tank is getting too low on gas. That's about all my tired old butt can handle without getting off to walk and stretch a bit.
Sometimes low and slow is the way to go.

Interesting, your bike is listed as holding 22 litters of fuel. The 84/85 held 24.5 litters. I have ran mine to 230 miles and then filled up.

I ran my '91 dry (un-intentionally) at 400kms.
Similiar riding conditions to yours with most of the day cruising at 100kph.
Usually, I get red light @ 250, stuttering @ ~300 so need to go to "reserve", and figure I still have about 50kms left.
It is a much too heavy bike to push :-(

Cheers, that's some good info.. Pretty sure mine's not power restricted - 12.11 @ 161kph down the 1/4 mile and that was only my 1st time down. Room for improvement  :good2:
Like I said, not sure of the K's, it had sat around an Auckland dealer for a year, they couldn't shift it for some reason so took a stupid offer for it, but it had a 15,000 on the clock when i got it, no way the k's were that low due to the wear on the bike. Lots of aftermarket bits on it, exhaust, bars, Brembo front brakes, braided clutch lines..
Definately not speed restricted either - have seen an indicated 220kph and she was keen for a little more but i ran out of safe road - got plenty of quiet straights here in NZ but there's the odd farmer and his cows wandering around you need to watch for  :bad:

Cheers,

I average around 320kms to a tank, but I've never pushed it to run dry and find out how much further to empty.

Interesting tidbit I just read from my workshop manual, I bought my '92 model in 1996 with 40000 kms on it. I currently have around 105000 kms on the FJ, and I previously hit 90000 kms in.......November 2000!!!. Man, I've got to get out more,  :sarcastic:, unbelievable.
