So i installed a new valvecover gasket and rubber on the bolts and thought i had done a god job as i did not fint any leaks after my first rides :good2:
But today after some riding i can see a small leak at one of the halfmoone shaped holes. :dash1:
What did i do wrong? i rinsed the surface througly and did not use any sealer.i thightened the bolts at 10Nm .Mayby it has started leaking because
i used oil to lubricate the downfacing surface of the gasket before i istalled it??
Pleas tell me that the leakage will stop soon and the gasket will settle :ireful:

Been a little while since I put one on, but I believe the Factory Service Manual calls out the usage of Yamabond in the areas where yours is leaking. If it called it out, I know that I would have done it that way. No leaks on mine.

Really?  Oil on new gasket?  We're you hoping  for a "pre-leak"?
Seriously,  I have never heard of oil a gasket prior to installation.  EVER!  I'd remove and clean, then try again.

A few things.

1) The gasket should have been glued to the valve cover. I have read Marty's comment that sealant should be used, but I have never been able to find that in the GYSM. I personally do not use any sealant on the sealing surface of the gasket to the head.

2) Hopefully the oil you are seeing is the oil you used on the mating surface. The oil will be trapped in the ribbed surface of the gasket and might be leaking out after getting a full heat cycle.

3) There are aftermarket gaskets & bolt seals on the market. They are not the quality level of the genuine Yamaha gasket. The rubber hardens much quicker than the Yamaha gasket. Also, if you buy a "NOS" Yamaha gasket on eBay, if it is chalky white when you get it, it is pretty old.

I only sell genuine Yamaha Valve Cover Gaskets & FJ Valve Cover Bolt Grommet.

You might be right but i  used oil on gaskets before like oilfilter oilseals or brakefluid on gaskets on brakepistons or clutch slave cylinder .I used only a thin layer on one side of the gasket .I is  made of rubber if it had been made of any other material i would not used anything.
Guess i have to remove and dry it up and try again :scratch_one-s_head:

1) i did not use any glue because it did not fall down when i turned the valvecover.

2)I was also thinking of that crossing fingers hope you right :good2:

3)The boltrubbers and gasket was bought fom ebay from a guy living in Norway same contry as me.It was maked as genuine oem yamaha parts, but at arival i could see that at least the boltrubberseals was not oem.The gasket was mounted on a cardboard with clear plastic over and
i could not see any marking that proves it genuine.
Thanks for advice :good2:

You're probably right. I thought I saw its callout in an exploded view, and it was pointed out with one of those oil can-looking icons they use for thread locker and such.

Don't have access to my factory service manual right now. I'm away from home, and in your neck of the woods.

Was really thinking about coming by before my trip, but plans here, are fluid. I am staying up on the Russian River outside of Guerneville until Thursday, so it wouldn't have happened regardless. Will have to happen on another trip here, and there will be more.
