Took a ride from home to Idyllwild and back.
Ran out of gas. Coasted the last 6 miles down hill
and made it back to my car port without pushing.
Fuck it,let's ride.

A 6 mile down hill stretch to the shed. I would not be that lucky. Almost has a coronary pushing the FJ 2 blocks once when I was test riding it and ran out of fuel (stuck fuel  float will do that)

The next day I checked the tank and found some gas still there. Petcock was in the "on" position. A new repacement from RPM, vacuum 84' type as my bike is an 84'. This all happened at 205 miles on this tank of gas. On the return from the West Coast Rally I went 220 + on a tank while rolling 75 -100. My question is why didn't I get to use all the gas available in the tank ? There's no reseve mode, no relays with a reseve switch like later models, so WTF?

Maybe you were down hill enough to leave the petcock uncovered and run out of gas.

Don't forget when you left the WCR you were loaded down in the rear. The lower the back of the tank and put the petcock in the fuel longer.

Just a thought...

Yep, just what Randy said..... :good:

Remember where your petcock is in relation to the fuel level in the tank, you will suck your tank dry going uphill, not so going down hill when the fuel sloshes to the front of the tank.

Think of it this way, good news....when you run out of gas early, at least you're going downhill....

It's 40 miles from your house to Idyllwild, so it sounds like you started your solo ride in the mountains with less than 1/2 tank of fuel, not the best idea, but no big deal if you consider that there are 2 gas stations in Idyllwild.

It was pretty much flat when I ran out. Hit neutral and started coasting on the flat section just above the look out before the down hill. Anyway I didn't try to refire the engine tip the next day. Lesson learned: gas up at 200 or less to be safe. Also has to do with throttle and speed. What I did on my FJ street fighter, always fun.

Cash, please post a pic of your bike.  Coasting all that way reminds me of brake races we used to have coming down from Angeles Crest or Latigo Canyon in Malibu.  Hope to ride with you again.
Chrome don't get you home.
