Hello from Norway! Former FJ1100 owner now bought a FJ1200 1tx

Hello all FJ Fans!
I Earlier had a FJ1100 blue and white colors had it for 6 years before i sold it.That was many years ago and i regret selling her.
Now after many years i found out that i just had to have an FJ again this time i bought a 86 FJ1200 Red and white with 115000 kilometers.
She looks wery wheathered with sunbleached front fender -sidecovers and back.My first thought was that im going to make her look like new again,but now i have started to like the heavy whethered look .She seem to be a headturner and yesterday a guy asked if he could take some
pictures of her =) while i was parked.
I have got some challenges with her and she seems to be more wornout than i first thought.Here are some of the things i been working on recently:
Forks: They was leaking badly and bottoming when braking
Clutch : big clonk sound when shifting gears
Backfiring popping from exhaust
Overheating after some slow driving and standing at idle it started to smoke badly frome engine.She looked as was going to turn into a fireball I almost panicked and threw my self on the bike and did some fast driving .when i stopped agin she had cooled down.I think its because cracks in rubber on inletmanifoils and badly smashed fins on oil cooler and also found a little oilleak from one of the bolts on valvecover.
The the most scary thing i found is small chunks of metal in the oil when i changed the oil.
Im coming back to what i have done in the maitainas forum.
I like to do mecanical stuff so now i got something to work on

Welcome, sounds like you got a bit of work to do on your bike. Keep us updated on your progress and post some pictures too.

Welcome to the forum   There are a few members on here that are from Norway. Most of what you mention as issues, are typical for a purchase of a 30 year old motorcycle, regardless of the miles.

Most of the issues should be fairly easy to address and actually be very beneficial for many miles to come.

I highly recommend getting replacement fork seals from RPM. There are many FJ owners that purchase fork seals from their local Yamaha dealer and end up with the wrong seals.

A couple of fixes for a clunky clutch. There is a rebuild kit for the clutch slave cylinder, RPM has brand new slave cylinders, Rebuild kit for the clutch master cylinder, and the Roller Shift Detent kit. http://rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=RPMRollerShiftkit&cat=39

Backfiring popping from exhaust

Smashed fins on the oil cooler is a very bad thing and could very easily be the cause of your over heating. My recommendation is to upgrade the oil cooler.

My suggestion would be to remove the oil pan and remove, clean and reinstall the oil pump pick up screen. You will be surprised at the amount of debris that will be caught by the screen. You can also find the intake manifolds at RPM and you do not have to order a bunch of different part numbers.

I also noticed by that parts diagram, the heat shield and carb stays have been discontinued. They might be discontinued to other US sources, but RPM has them in stock.

For the large chunks of metal when you changed the oil......That very well could be from general wear over the last 30 years. My suggestion would be to remove the oil pan and remove, clean and reinstall the oil pump pick up screen. You will be surprised at the amount of debris that will be caught by the screen. Hi and thanks for suggestions .I definitly will check out for parts at rpm i have already changed the oil seals and added 19mm spacers in the forks
i have wrote about that in maintaninace forum.So far the results are good but not 100%  as the antidive not working so i think i will go for the rpm forkvalves and also replace the metal bushings soon.The clutch i have tried to repair (wrote about in maintainace forum) seems i have to order some parts there to.overheating has not happened after i opened the oilcoolerfins ,but doesent look to good so going to replace the oilcooler and new carburettor intake rubbers.
