Clutch issue

Last night I was coming home from about an 80 mile ride when I noticed my clutch lever suddenly seemed to have a lot more play in it. So i figured I broke a like or something was leaking. I pretty much had no clutch at all the last 5 miles home. When I got home to my surprise there was no fluid leaks anywhere. When I got up this morning the clutch seems to work again. Maybe a little weaker but not much. I don't remember eating any mushrooms so I'm a little baffled.

The clutch can leak, it also self bleeds till it runs out of fluid. Your slave is likely having a slow leak. A common issue with the heat soaked clutch slaves on our FJs. Top off the master till you fix the problem and remove the lower chin fairing to reduce the damage of Dot3 fluid on the ABS plastic...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

The fluid wasn't low and I see no visible evidence of fluid anywhere. But obviously something caused it so... I pulled all new fluid through and, like you said, I'll lay a towel folded up under the m/c. The lower crowl has already suffered the brake fluid bath years before so that small piece user the slave is dissolved away. Gonna take it for a ride right now and keep an exact eye on the level of fluid and if theirs any bubbles in the system when I return.

Remove the pivot bolt from the clutch lever, and I'd bet the little return coil spring has broken, inside the clutch lever mount.  It's a stock Yamaha part, easy to buy and easy to replace.  Check that part first.

Thread hijack!

This weekend I replaced the chain and sprockets. Well, I had to remove the clutch slave, but I didn't mess with it, just wiped it with cloth. Day later I saw a drip or two under the bike. I noticed fluid runs over the filter case. I am still not sure if it is the oil or clutch, but will check today. All rubbers looked fine when I had it removed with no old corrosion so it wasn't leaking before, that's for sure. Fluid level seems fine for now, clutch feel is the same like before.  :unknown:

The clutch slave cylinder is either in or its out, the chances of the clutch spring sticking in would be very remote unless the spring was simply toast which would be felt via slipping. Those variables aside along with everything dry(no leaks) I'd be looking at the M/C. It is possible for the cup in the M/C to bypass if it is on its way out the door, it does not have to be leaking outside the system to have an issue, though that is the normal circumstance that most see. I/d be looking into that M/C before it leaves you stranded. Glad you made it back.

Turned out it was the slave cylinder.  Very slight seeping leak that was being absorbed by the dirt, dust, debris that accumulated over time.  Luckily I had what I needed from 1100 and just polished the inside and replaced cracked rubber.  Go to go now.
