A few weeks ago a buddy and I were talking about different bikes and their top speed and I told him that I figured my FJ could do about 240 km/h (150 mph). He quite emphatically stated that there was no way the FJ could go that fast. So of course it got me to thinking that I might just need to find out for myself. So I did. Yesterday. For the sake of this discussion board this test was done on a closed course by a professional rider, definitely not on a back road with a posted limit of 80 km/h. See recorded results below:

Not too shabby for a 24 year old motorcycle with 145,000 km on the odometer - yes, it does have a 1314 cc big-bore kit and the top end was redone 3 years ago, but still I think it's an impressive run for the Blue Bunny.

For the metrically challenged that's 242 kph = 150.37182852  (mph)   :mail1:

What closed course were you able to do this on btw?

17 front and 38 rear. Not sure what the exact RPM was - not much time to look down at the tach.

A closed course. Most definitely not County Road 2 (Goshen Line) between Zurich, ON and Hwy 83.

Definitely most impressive but I believe it was your big bore mill that netted you the last few mph to hit the 150 mark. I know the stock 1200 is close to 150mph but could not hit the mark, maybe a nice long straight down a sloping road it could hit 150 mph. It was funny seeing your post Zwartie as you seem to be a conservative gentlemen but I guess you still have a need for speed when it is done safely off public roads. Your FJ is fast, I would like Fred to do a high speed pull on his big bore, his bike sounds really scary in the kookaloo zone with pulling the front wheel at 80mph, talk about keeping your eye on the revs!!!!

I'm sure that the 1314 cc's had something to do with it. That being said, I did have a Givi 46L top case on the back so I'm sure that added some drag to the equation. You are right - when it comes to riding in Ontario I am a "conservative gentleman" for the most part. Just not enough curves around here to make it interesting and I'm not normally about trying to hit top speed - it's the kind of thing that can get you into a heap of trouble with the law or get seriously injured. When it comes to riding the likes of PA, VA, WV, TN and NC I do enjoy riding the many curves at a "spirited" pace. Always within control but it's nice to scrape the pegs once in a while.

Speedhut GPS reading that may or may not have been recorded on a closed circuit last weekend. Didn't notice the tacho reading but I'm sure it must have been right up there. Didn't realise that I was going that fast until I got home and checked the retained speedo reading. 257 kph = 159.692 mph for those that are metrically challenged.

Most impressive.   :good2:  I sometimes wonder what an FJ could do with a more modern head design.  Say... vertical inlet ports.  'Twod be interesting...

Had a 70 GS stage I that my brother the Leo. Clocked at 154 mph on his radar. Had my built 87 fzr1000. Past 190mph on the speedo.(at a quick glance). Was still accelerating. Just wanted to say I was past 190
Got my Raptor 660 up to 92 on the ice radar run. But actually had to start about a 1/4 mile back of the normal start line too get that. We have a local turbo sled guy. That I watched do 144mph in 600ft.(in crappy conditions was snowing hard, so wasn't clear ice) Back in 86. When I was young and stupid. My first FJ saw 158mph on the speedo all the time. Couldn't get to go past that. (Totally stock, and it was the speedo. So 150ish probably). Now that I'm older and wiser. I don't really like the high speed stuff. Prefer a 15mph corner sign and seeing how fast I can get through the corners. Then backing off on the straights
Would like to see what Fred can get outta his, now that he's got the GPS with the top speed readout.

I am waiting with anticipation for my Speed Hut gauges to arrive and try out some of the interesting speedo settings.

That's impressive Pete, just goes to show what a bit of tuning can achieve.

Too young to be old but old enough to know better.

You answered a couple of my questions.  Thank you for posting.  I think I'll leave well enough alone.  I'll never get to 200 no matter what. I'm way to old anyway.  A turbo can be done. & to reach that speed in under 700' is crazy fast. I  just wanted another FJ for all the obvious reasons. I'll put a great battery in,  LED's, & some serious horns.  For now.

As far back as even the first FJ 1100's, electronically measured speeds of up to 154mph were being reported in road tests (level roads). I remember tests of both a 1TX 1200 and a 3CV 1200 that measured 152mph, but the 3XW's were always reported as measured between 141 and 145mph - likely as much down to the extra weight and bigger fairing and taller screen than anything else.

My Garmin GPS posted 151 mph on my 3CV (my speedo was showing right on 160mph) on the run down from the Gantry to the Exit Slip at the Nordschleife and it was still pulling (on 18/38 sprockets). If I could have gone straight on to the Bridge I'm sure it would have gone faster without any trouble (there's a very slight downhill there). My Aprilia RSV posted 166 mph on the same Garmin between the Gantry and Exit Slip, but I came out of the final corner a good 10-12 mph faster on the RSV than I did on the FJ so it had a good head start.

Engine wise my FJ is stock except for a Remus exhaust and a K & N filter. My RSV had a modified airbox (less restrictive), running the de-restricted ECU mapping and with a less restrictive silencer. RWHP on the Aprilia was supposed to be about 125, whereas the FJ was always quoted as around 110-115 RWHP if healthy, so it's hardly surprising the RSV went 15 mph faster.
