Hey there,
I bought a 91 FJ 1200 from a lady who had bought it new. It has 15,555 miles. It is nice but has a lot of scratches and nicks on the bodywork from her dropping it in her garage and at red lights.

I went to do an oil change and did not find a spring or washer in the canister. The manual I have is for 1100 & 1200 to 1993 and shows a spring and washer.

My questions are: 1) Does the 91 require the spring & washer? 2) Will it run safely without the spring & washer for a short time until I get them?

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Hey fjmonkey,

After reading other posts and my experiences with other canister filters I agree with you. However what do I do for now so I can get to work tomorrow (my car is waiting for a part)? is it safe to continue without the spring & washer? I rode it home when I picked it up & today back & forth to work for about 100 miles.

Let me know your thoughts.

Oil will still flow just not get filtered, one or two days won't make much of a difference in my opinion.

The monkey is right.  Essentially you will be riding a bike with no oil filter.  Won't hurt it a bit.

If you order the adapter tonight and are in the states you will see it by the latest Friday maybe even Thursday depending where you are located.

I just ordered the spin on filter adapter. I had picked up four of the canister filters thinking of the future so I'll stop at the local Yamaha store & get the spring & washer anyway (maybe not the washer, I have one that would work).

I have a new question: I buttoned up the filter & put oil in, then as I was lubricating the chain I noticed there were three evenly spaced perfect "cracks" in the rear brake rotor. I inspected it from the other side and see there is a metal plate between each "crack". I would be correct assuming these "cracks" are meant to be, right?

I bet you get the adaptor from RPM before you get the spring!

If the cracks are angular from inside to outside and straight then they are part of the original design. My '86 vented rotors have this feature.

Having some exposure to such matters, you are likely correct.

Must sleep now, thanks for the help.

There is little doubt I'll be back.

Yes they are angular.

I presumed as much based on precision but had to ask since I am just barely getting familiar with it.

Thanks again, good night (or morning-where are you?).

When you notice those cracks are gone, that will be a good time to change the rotor(s).
