1989 FJ1200 Maintenance and Attention List

I'm hoping to use this as a checklist of sorts, as for whatever reason, I keep losing them.

Yesterday, May 29th -



It was 13 years ago almost to the day that we first met and rode together.

Terry lives in St. Louis and works as a factory trained Mazda mechanic. He is possibly the best mechanic I have ever known, and he does motorcycles on the side.

We just ride, when we can. 

Yesterday we swapped bikes, it was his first time on a FJ1200.

I need tires, the pressure was a little low anyway.

Clutch, it slips a bit sometimes.

Front brakes, they need attention. Terry thinks I need to rebuild the calipers to improve the feel, he's right - but I feel I need to "do it all".

Still, he came away impressed.

Thus, I start my list.

Steering Head Bearings - inspect and whatever it needs.
Front brakes - go with blue dots or rebuild the stock calipers and master. Replace lines.
Clutch - Replace plates (OEM) and consider coil spring conversion or dual stock diaphragm springs.
Tires - Well, bite the bullet and do the 17" rear wheel conversion and get it over with or go with another set of stock sizes?
Chain and Sprockets - Still acceptable, inspect
That leads me to a full service, might as well check the valves, replace the plugs, etc.

Times being what they are for me, I'll be budget conscience. Mentally I need the challenges.

I've got to flip a few bikes to ramp up the cash reserves and free up space, then we'll see where this takes us.

good list ,, put the 17" on .
you can add another fibre to the clutch and run a single spring . (nice and cheap)
use fjr1300 master brake and clutch ( look almost stock to fj)

Thanks! I was able to sell a few bikes so I have some room to work.

We've relocated to assist with parents, it's been a trip on many levels. So, we're in-between permanent housing and a place to work on stuff.

I did somehow end up with two more motorcycles that actually excite me -

One being a Suzuki TS185 -



The other, from a totally different source, a TS400



The FJ is and has remained a "keeper" and I don't see that changing.

I agree.  17" - 5.5 wide --  the GSXR swap is easy, check the files for a great write-up.

This wheel size will provide you with a tire that has a better profile (less like the profile of a bicycle tire) and a much greater selection of rubber

I have made up a list with a real time cost for the 17" GSXR wheel mod for another member awhile ago. Give me a few hours and I can post up a real time today parts list and cost. A good budget is about $300.00

Order new bearings and verify that the spacer that is inside the wheel, in between the wheel bearing. You are able to use the OEM FJ axle and adjustment hardware.

This should be close to being a complete list. Along with a set of washers from Ace Hardware that is mentioned on the mod thread.
