I'm looking for a blue '89 fuel tank in very good condition.  The inside of mine is a mess.

I'll also consider other year/colors if I can't find an '89.

Thanks

I have a tank, quality is questionable. It had a liner/seal done to it. Bought it as it was posted as an '86 tank. it is an '89+ tank. No paint.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Thanks for the response Mark, I'll look a little longer.  It's going to be a tough item to find.  I think I'd better start making plans to get a good quality tank and get it painted.

I made a mess of trying to repair a leak at the fuel filter bracket. I  used a hair dryer to dry out the tank after I had washed it out and left the dryer running for too long--- it got way to hot and blistered the coating in the tank. Then I had the leak welded and brazed and the coating got burnt and blistered.  Now it appears to be disintegrating in my gasoline.  Going to clean the carbs today.....

I've been reading about tank problems here for years, has anyone ever considered cutting out the bottom of the tank and putting a fuel bladder in there?
You can even have them made to shape to maximise the capacity.

Mark,

It might be worth a shot of saving your tank with these guys: www.fueltankservices.com

I have a couple of buddies that have old school rides like ours, they have used them successfully and have been more than happy. I have not had an opportunity to use them yet, but just like me, he works seven days a week.

Well I'm making progress.  Bob Weymouth has loaned me a nice tank off a '90 to get me by until I either find a tank, fix the one I have, or get his '90 painted to match my '89.  Our riding season has just begun and not being able to ride and not knowing when I would be able to get back to riding was discouraging to say the least.  It's amazing that I could find a 26 year old tank an hour and half from my house.  If it weren't for the legends guys and this web site I'd be out of luck.

Randy, I called fuel tank services business - thank you --  It sounds like this is the answer for getting mine cleaned and sealed, however, I was quoted $575 plus shipping costs, so I'm looking at other options.

Also, I may have located an '89 tank at a salvage yard--waiting for pictures.

$575 isn't cheap... I get it.
OTOH, when the '89 tank was last available from Yamaha, it was +/- $860, FWIW.     :pardon:

I'm back on the road with a '90 gas tank, painted to the '89 'Shiny Black' color.

Lessons learned from trying to fix a leaky gas tank:

•   If the inside of your tank looks like it has a creamy colored coating, it does and it's called "Kreem Fuel Tank Liner"
•   Brazing may be OK, but if you do any welding on the tank, it will cause the Kreem Fuel Tank Liner to bubble and burn. The burnt and flaking Kreem coating will render your now non-leaking tank useless.
•   If you're a member of the FJ forum, you stand a good chance of finding a good deal on a decent tank pretty close to home.
•   The Dupont color code:M4603K, alt #o    found in this link  http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1720.msg13661#msg13661 does appear to be a perfect color match for the '89's.

This is a blurry picture---I'll post a better one in better light  -- sunlight if we can get it.
