Leopard,
Those are "Valve Keepers". A pair of them will fit around the end of each valve stem and "keep" it from falling into the combustion chamber.

You'll find them underneath the valve shims when you do a valve adjustment.

Unless you're prepared to remove your head for a full-on valve job, then you probably won't need any of these.

wait, so are those a tool or a functional engine part?
i'm trying to budget an overhaul of sorts, lots of rubber bits & gaskets to replace.

Valve Keepers are reusable but you will need a valve spring compressor tool.
